Freeze it. see how that goes... Be VERY careful when doing this as powering up too soon can cause it to die tragically and possibly a long with your motherboard and other parts.
or do what i did once... Drop the HDD from a "safe" hight = about 30cm, use a folded up news paper on a desk or something to drop it onto, worked like a charm for me, i still have that drive now set as a D drive on another system
Hmmm remember that, well the only reason that drive of mine isn't as a OS drive is because it has the same problem as yours does. I'd suggest he gets a new drive and maybe let you have that if you want it... the the time and effort you've put in to trying to get it to boot an OS.
