If it wasn't for the NES we would have lost video games to the 1983 crash. That article you posted is a lot of fluff. I mean for f#@K sake they only made 10.6 million units of the Dreamcast. Nintendo won the console wars man. I'm a huge SEGA fan but lets be realistic here.

Hi everybody, this is a really amazing read. It's cool to hear that the Sega Genesis was outselling SNES by as much as 5 to 1 and the Sega Dreamcast was the most successfully selling gaming Console of all time in North America.

I've still got my game gear with the tv tuner -too bad analog tuners are paperweights now. I got a Genesis because I wanted to play 16 bit games. I bought a SNES because it was the only one that had Street Fighter 2 (at the time). Still have all of the equipment and games in mint condition, but my mom threw out the boxes -curses!!!

No, the DC was NOT killed off by piracy. It was killed off by the PS2. Once Sony announced the release date for PS2, DC sales died out and everyone pre-ordered PS2 instead because it did more than play games. Sega continued to support the Dreamcast in Japan for years after it was discontinued in N. America and Europe. New consoles and games were still being sold as late as 2006 and there were still some small, independent developers releasing games for it through unofficial channels as recently as 2010.

Buy the time the ps2 release date was annouced there was over 10 million dreamcast owners !

Everyone didnt stop buying dreamcasts because of the ps2 infact the dreamcast was selling well up until sega dropped the bomb shell.
The problem was the hardware was selling well yet game sales where poor. For every game sold in the shops there was around 12 pirate copys sold or downloaded on the black market. Hence games developers started pulling out of making any new games for the dreamcast. Sega then had to pull the plug on the dreamcast, the main reason being sega released a few games for the dreamcast & lost money on them big time. Take shenmue for instance.

It is true that the Dreamcast was/is not the best selling system in North America, though it was definitely an awesome system imo, had some excellent titles, Sonic Adventure, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio,MDK2, Killer Instinct 2 and many others, plus, online capabilities out of the box.

Still have my N64, PS1 and Sega Genesis too, all great consoles.

The dreamcast was killed off by piracy. I remember when copyed dreamcast games where selling on carboot sales world wide. Best of all no hardware mod was needed to run copyed games

TBH, the Dreamcast was dying off, THEN Utopia released the boot up disc and the consoles started selling again lol To this day, the best version of Resident Evil Code Veronica is the original Dreamcast one

Back OT. I always preferred the SNES to the Mega Drive. But there is no doubting that the Mega Drive was an important, great console.

Erm, excuse me...................VANQUISH!!!! That thing is a masterpiece! But I agree, good SEGA games are few and far between nowadays. Most SEGA games seem to be very basic with very little depth

Has anybody played Phantasy Star for the Sega Master System? IMHO it was the best RPG in it's time and the best all time even for today. If you've played this game, then you will understand what I mean, if you have not it's worth buying the game and even the system just to play it so you can understand what I mean.

Has anybody played Golden Axe 3 for the Sega Genesis or even in the Arcade? Well I have history with this game, something that Sega stole from me...I can continue if you are interested in hearing about my story...

I would like to see other games from its other consoles, too. Right now you can get select Sega Genesis and I think Master System games from Steam. Dreamcast games would be awesome!!! I stilll have my Dreamcast but would love to see what emulation can do via Steam for a 3D console. Sonic Adventure is great and Sword of Berserk: Guts Rage is also a lot of fun.

I have yet to see anything that can replicate the fun of Sonic Adventure on DC. Even the ports to gamecube just didn't have it. Sword of the Berserk is probably one of the hardest action games of all time. Make ninja gaiden seem easy.

I kicked ass and I usually suck at games but I was determined to be victorious. It had extreme high production value and in many ways was like an interactive movie.

I loved how you could attack your own teammate and throw him off the side of the map. that was beyond epic - the amount of petty arguments i had with mates while playing that game then resulting in one of us being thrown off the side of the map was such a laugh. team killing can be so much fun.....

BLASPHEMY! I loved my game gear. beat the hell out of my gameboy color, and even advance! I had to play my gamboy with that stupid magnifying glass and light. The gamegear had a huge screen and great backlight.

The former President and CEO of Sega of America, The Dreamcast was discontinued because the new chairman of Sega wanted the company to focus on software. What an Ahole for doing such a stupid thing.

The Dreamcast was so popular Sega couldn't fill all the pre-orders. They always had 100's of 1,000's constantly on pre-order. Bad move Sega, really bad move. Plus it doesn't help when Sony buys off companies to not release games on Sega machines and/or to postpone them for as long as possible.

Dreamcast was much better than XBOX & PS2 by far and today it's a legacy machine. I still play it, I don't have the XBOX 360 or the PS3, no need for them, the PC kills them both.

For me it was Spiderman. HOWEVER there is a game called Lunar. One of the best RPGs I have ever played. Vay is another good RPG. Stay away from the FMV games. There is also a bad ass Sonic game too. The name escapes me.
