Setup built need help

Hi.

I'm building up a setup with spare parts I got and a mobo someone just gave me.

Right from the start I'm telling you that I WILL NOT BUY OTHER PARTS.

Mobo: Asrock G41C-S
CPU: 775 dualcore E2180
Memory: 3 gigs DDR2-800
GPU: GeForce 8600GT 512megs DDR3

So I want to know what would be the safe overclock on that cpu if I use air cooling only?

What kind of heatsink do you have now?

stock? aftermarket?

Stock. Could go with time with aftermarkek but only when i will have the money to get a quadcore and ddr3.

Also at same time what it the difference between the E serie like E2180 and the Pentium D serie?

Pentium D is a pair of pentium 4s as a dual core. the E2180 chips are core 2 duo's with less L2 memory and a lower FSB.

I wouldn't overclock with the stock cooler, it's pretty bad and barely kept my Core 2 Duo E6600 as acceptable temperatures. Also with the Pentium Ds being older P4 cores like Geofransis said before, they generate a ton of heat and they're not very fast. Take the E2180 if you can over a PD, it's a night and day difference.

I think the E2xxx chips are cooler, but I don't know what kind of heatsink they had..

Try something, but watch the heat. 65C or something. Maybe 70C.

Yea E2180 pentium dual core chips are great overclockers all mine ran at 3.2ghz easily with just a little extra voltage but even that is too much for the stock heatsink. Because they are baised on core 2 duo chips Even with the reduced L2 it still performs within 10% of a full c2d

That was my loaded temperature with the stock cooler on my old E6600. :eek:

You're not going to be able to mess with the voltage too much. Make sure you have plenty of airflow if you're going to try and do it with the stock cooler as well.

Yeah I wouldn't touch the voltage really.

Problem solved...kind off. The mobo blowed up after installation and no overclock was done at that stage. I will know the difference for next time
