Hey everybody, it's been a while since I posted here, so anyways a good buddy of mine is offering to sell me his gtx 970 for 130$, since he is picking a 1080.

So anyways two questions, one is the card worth the money and how much performance gain should I expect over my 960 and I was thinking about getting a 3 gb 1060 but I have saw the 970 and 3gb 1060 are similar in performance so I thought the 970 would a good alternative.

Thanks in advance.

Good deal, since you'll be saving up like $100. if it's used though be careful with that.

Even from a 960 it would be a huge improvement. like 20-40 FPS increase

Just remember it has 3.5GB fast vram but if you're playing at 1080p you should be fine, you may need to lower the settings of some more recent games though.
It's still a good upgrade from your 960.

130 eur for 25-35% performance, on a midrange gpu? Meh. Its a baby step. In a year the 970 will again feel underpowered. Not such a great deal with your current card.

Thing is, if a 960 feels too weak, a 970 will not fix that. Look at the recent Shadow if War performance: 44 fps average on the 970. If your target is 60, neither card is comfortable.

Do it OP. It's a huge improvement over the 960. Also 960s can sell for up to $100, so you can get a huge part of the money back.

Yeah, do it. When it's all said and done (assuming you sell your 960), you'll have the 970 for less than $50.

Try to milk at least $80 from your 960, get the most of it... GTX 970 will be noticeable upgrade, if possible repaste it, take a deep clean on fan and cooler fins

Enjoy !

Congrats. There is a huge gap between 960 and 970. Nvidia used to put something in between but they only do that secretly by allowing OEM prebuilt manufactures having them, not regular customers with the "OEM" suffix. I would find machines in various stores online with those secret cards for a while then nvidia would finally decide to list it in their web site.

i have a couple 970's, and they handle the games myself and the kids throw at them nicely @ 1080 & 1200p no problem. considering a 1050ti goes for $130+/= $20, and is nowhere near as capable, its definitely a great deal (condition permitting)

Definitely a good deal. I'd go for it in a heartbeat, especially if it's a GPU from a friend, and not some random dude on an online auction.
Good luck with your new[used] card!

Well OP GTX 970 is so much more capable then GTX 960,depend of your CPU and on what res. you going to play games but you can expect more than 50% gains in FPS(1080p)...also GTX 970 is GREAT OC and easily can reach the FPS numbers that GTX 980 can make in games.......

Just remember it has 3.5GB fast vram but if you're playing at 1080p you should be fine, you may need to lower the settings of some more recent games though.
It's still a good upgrade from your 960.
I have a 1060 3gb and have never had to lower a single setting compared to the GTX 1060 6gb or AMD 480 settings. The whole you at least 4gb of vram for 1080p is fanboy hyperbole.

Ultra sexy reference 970's he mean

& In brand new condition to boot ;)

God I love those cards , and they overclock so nicely. I love it when a reference GPU outperforms aftermarket ones. And if it ever dies, I can use it as a weapon because it weighs 3 pounds

Not so much about the amounts of VRAM, but VRAM bandwidth total + core counts. At 1080p 3GB is sufficient, for now, with all bells and whistles. If you have 2GB, you just use cheap AA and its also enough.

i love the fact that cooler shroud is metallic, you can give it a nice custom finish with your personal color choice! mine is black and looks twice as sexy, gotta do a little research about custom Bios for better values!
