Hi Guys! I was wondering if it is the right time to get a new gpu. I have an ancient MSI GTS 250 1GB right now, and it has HW support for DX10 only. I don't know if DX12 cards will be out anytime soon. I'd definitely wait for those if those were available within a few months. However, there's an offer on a Galaxy GTX770 2GB GC card here in an online store, which I can grab for about ~$400. The MSI Twin Frozr is ~$457 and the Asus DCII about ~$455 - $600. Would it be a good idea to grab the Galaxy now, or may be just get a damn 750Ti, since none of these is gonna be supporting DX12? Or just keep waiting for higher end Maxwell or even Pascal? BTW, don't get freaked out about the prices - I'm in India. I am not sure about the quality/reliability of the Galaxy's components. Have any of you used this or any other card from Galaxy? Please share your thoughts.
Edit:
Target is 1080p only ;)

OK, filled up the system specs.

The 780 is WAY more pricey and not much fps gains (This particular Galaxy 770 @ ~24K INR and 780 is over 40-52K INR). Besides, I don't wanna spend too much given that DX12 is announced. From the reviews I've seen that for 1080p the 770 is good-enough at pretty high settings. Besides, I can always go SLI later on if needed. All I am concerned about (if I do get this one) is the quality of the Galaxy parts (other than the obviously sad blue theme which doesn't quite go with my red/black rig :( ). Is it as good as Asus/Msi ?

Just FYI, DX12 is unlikely to need a new card to support it. A DX11 card will support DX12.

No. Some of the features of the API will be available, but not ALL of it. There will be some DX12-specific features which WILL need newer hardware.

Haven't used a Galaxy card, but how bad could it be? Think you should try Google on that topic. In my opinion - there is no need to get the best GPU's, ever ,just because of price/performance, unless you just want it for bragging right. If you can't wait - go and get the 770.

Nabarun, just bcs DX12 is announced doesn't mean that game developers will trash everything they do now and jump straight for DX12 not gonna happen this year or next year on all titles.

and not many games support DX11.2 so why be like all this now? i would go for Asus or MSI GTX 780, for myself bcs i got a MSI Z87I Gaming AC board i will go MSI when i upgrade next when my GTX 670 can't keep up.

Nobody is going to care about DX12 for another year at least. Even then nobody is going to use it, and what few games will be made with DX12 will be DX11 compatible and not a single thing will be lost or cared about. Buy the best GPU you can afford now, and stick with it for a couple of years. DX12 might be useful in a number of years, just like DX11, which took ages to become a standard API.

"Q: Should I wait to buy a new PC or GPU?
A: No – if you buy a PC with supported graphics hardware (over 80% of gamer PCs currently being sold), you’ll be able to enjoy all the power of DirectX 12 games as soon as they are available."

Straight from Microsoft. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/directx/archive/2014/03/20/directx-12.aspx?Redirected=true

So, how long, do you guys think, before games will require DX12 hw support as minimum sysreq?

End of the year, according to some rumors. It's out of your budget probably but how about a Sapphire Tri-X R9 290?

BTW, it was nice to meet a fellow Indian nerd. :toast:

Edit: Indian market is funny. A GTX 780 Ti costs about 15% more than a GTX 780. And a GTX 670 costs a paltry 10% less than a GTX 680.

Not at all interested in the literally "HOT" AMD offerings. For that kind of money IMHO this is a MUCH better deal.

I would wait, for one reason. Maxwell.. The 750 shows that nvidia has a really nice new architecture up their sleeve. It's only a matter of time before we get maxwell equivalent 770's. If you can't wait the 770 is a huge upgrade for you and is a great card.

The Tri-X 290 is MUCH quieter AND MUCH cooler than a reference card. See online reviews if you don't believe me.

Edit: Why don't you get a 280X??

Yeah, I know. The thing is, this particular 770 is QUITE a steal, really. But it doesn't match my red/black theme, and I have absolutely no idea about Galaxy's quality/service etc. And from the looks of it, since both AMD and nvidia's 20nm dreams are deep in water, I'm wondering if the Maxwells will be arriving sooner than expected.

I'm sure it's better than the reference, but the nvidias are even more cooler and quieter.

if u don't know it, but Nvidia is rebuilding Maxwell to run on 28nm bcs TSMC can't produce enought 20nm for the request there is, i read that last week or something.

so it will take a little more time before we will see a high-end Maxwell gpu out, unfortunately.

but the nvidias are even more cooler and quieter:p

You clearly haven't read the reviews. 290 Tri-X is cooler

and quieter than a GTX 770 using the TITAN cooler

The Tri-X cooler is a MONSTER. It's not your run-of-the-mill cooler.

Isn't that exactly why we should expect them sooner ?

No. They have to start over the optimization process for the 28 NM node. The GPU gets delayed. On the other hand, supply shouldn't be an issue once the optimizations are done.

You clearly haven't read the reviews. 290 Tri-X is cooler
and quieter than a GTX 770 using the TITAN cooler

The Tri-X cooler is a MONSTER. It's not your run-of-the-mill cooler.
I think it's not quite apples to apples comparison Anandteck did there. For example, Asus 280x DCII should be compared with Asus 770 DCII, and so on. Besides, aren't the tdp on the AMD cards higher? But interesting results there. Sure makes me think :p The price/performance ratio of the 280x sure looks tempting. This one in particular could be a nice addition...

No. They have to start over the optimization process for the 28 NM node. The GPU gets delayed. On the other hand, supply shouldn't be an issue once the optimizations are done.
I thought since it's already a working/proven architecture, it shouldn't take much time.

I wouldn't expect to see even mid-range Maxwell GPUs until mid-year or later. Not to mention, previous gen cards will just get cheaper. I don't think Maxwell on 28nm is going to bring about a huge improvement. It will just run cooler and use less power, so they can up clocks, but I don't see anything revolutionary happening.

I sure do like the less tdp/heat and better performance as seen in the 750(Ti).

For 1080p a GTX 770 is plenty. There may be an occasional game here and there that will cause you to have to turn down a setting or two but for most games the 770 will have no problems. Going from a GTS 250 to a GTX 770 will be amazing. I'm not familiar with Galaxy products but as others have suggested it would be a good idea to google it and read some reviews.
