However, you won't be able to do Crysis well at highest settings at that res with your current card.

Get the monitor for now ... and wait till the prices drop ... another few weeks to go for nVidias FERMI launch .... lets hope their prices are competitive so that ATi drops the prices on the 5xxx series ...

EDIT: I like the ASUS monitor out of the two ... but check these as well ....

Catch 22. All so depends on what games you playing too and what games you think you be playing buy time you upgrade the other.

IMO i'd get a 5850 then use mass AA \ AF :p :). As if you do it the other way your not going need AA but if you play games like Stalker for example you going run in to smoothness issue's.

All though there is a catch to that to as if there is no AA support it's going look real bad but that said most games have AA support so again 5850.

EDIT: there is that point AFW says the prices are likely to drop to so wait if you can

I'd grab the Asus out of the two and wait for video card prices to drop, as afw said. Now's really not the best time to be buying video cards.

Catch 22.
That's exactly what I thought. If you get a bigger monitor, you need more GPU, if you get more GPU, then you need a bigger monitor.

I would get the monitor. I would rather have a big monitor and play at reduced settings than to max out the game on a smaller one. In your situation, a 4870 should be able to play most games at high settings at 1920x1080. But the difference between 19in and 24in is HUGE. I speak from personal experience. Getting a bigger monitor will be one of the most awesome things you can do. A new CPU or GPU will give you a good performance boost in games but a new monitor will make everything you do on your computer look amazing.

I was thinking about getting a new monitor, my ''19 Hanns G is ok, but i want a higher quality image than 1440x900. I was thinking about going to a 24'' monitor.(1920x1080)

Here's the monitors i was looking at:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001O9EUSO/?tag=tec06d-20

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001LYPIIS/?tag=tec06d-20

Or

Should i just get a 5850?

I'm a heavy gamer, and i play all types of games.(besides RTS, MMO's and most RPG's)

Well, that is sort of a difficult decision. Personally I wouldn't bother with 24-inch setups. Ever since I got my 28-inch I don't even use my 42-inch TV for watching TV/movies. So, there are more benefits a large monitor gives you than just gaming related stuff. Heck, few weeks ago TigerDirect had a 28-inch screen on sale for around $255-$260 with free shipping. That is pretty close to what decent 24-inchers cost nowadays.

It all depends if your games are running fine with your current monitor/res. I mean, if you are having problems with some games at 1440x900 with you current video card, then you are definitively going to have problems at 1920x1200 with that same card in those games. If you can max out your games at 1440x900 then get a new monitor, but you might need a new card since 1920x1200 is going to put a strain on that 4870 of yours.

Honestly, I would get both and be done with it. Get a monitor first and then get a nice card a month or two down the road once prices drop due to Fermi release.

Note: By the way I have a 19-inch Hanns-G monitor serving as my auxiliary screen. It is a pretty decent monitor.

Widescreen 19" monitors are a pain in the rectum imo. 1280*1024 is much better on a monitor that size. So I'd go for that Asus monitor.

Sure a 28 incher would be nice, but those are a bit to big imo.. Unless you're using them as a telly as well, but on a normal desk it's just to big. I for one think 22 inch is the sweet spot. :)

Gotta agree with Frick here. I have a 21.5 inch 1920x1080 and absolutely love it. 24" monitor's pixel pitch is way too large for me. I have to apply lots of AA to get rid of jaggies.

I have to agree with the masses here too. My Asus 21.5" 1920x1080 looks great. You can probably wait for the video card until prices drop, or find a used 4870 for some crossfire action. My 4850s in crossfire completely shred Mass Effect 2 at 1920x1080, so if you are going for the bang for buck I say find a cheap 4870 for crossfire, buy the Asus monitor, and wait 6-9 months for the HD5000 video card. :toast:

Edit: Ok maybe just wait 2-3 months for the HD5000 :D

Atm a monitor's a better investment than a card that should be coming down in price soon. Besides, a 4870 won't struggle too much with reasonable settings at 1920x1080

Erm, why settle for less and get 1080p 16:9, when you can get full WUXGA 1920X1200 16:10?

You should look into Iiyama, their prices are aggressive for what they offer, and you might even find one of their 26" for less than most other manufacturer's 24"

2607WS
http://www.iiyama.com/en_GB/Product/category/2/product/180

FYI, I tested out monitors at 1080p for a while, on both 24 and 26", and I really did notice the difference between the 16:9 and 16:10. I would never drop back to 1080p.

I think we're all agreed. Definitely the montior first and wait to see what happens in the gfx market. I have a 24" BenQ and it's far superior at 16:10 from my previous 22" LG. And then i'd go for a 5850 surely they'll drop in price?? or if pigs fly, buy a GTX470 if they're affordable in comparison.
Remember, you get to sell your old monitor and card so you could make back cash on those?

Thanks guys.:)

How do you guys think this monitor will do?:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002453K5G/?tag=tec06d-20

I think you'll have a tough time finding a 16:10 monitor for around that price range, however if you are going with 16:9, then maybe this Acer is more aesthetically appealing, for a hair more in cost? :

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00365WZZO/?tag=tec06d-20

Though I have not found any positive or negative reviews on it.

EDIT: Here's a decent buy : http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Y1QK2W/?tag=tec06d-20
16:10, two used for $195. I'd get in contact with the sellers and have a chat with them, but as long as it's not banged up and has no pixel issues, that's a good steal.
Comments: "Very good condition in retsil box with all accessories"
Comments: "great monitor. used it for a while but no longer need. no pixles are out on this "

EDIT: To give you a rough idea of the difference between 16:9 and 16:10 on a screen either 24 or 26 inch in size, see the two attachments. It's not dead on accurate, but that's about how it would be(though with you on a smaller monitor I guess you won't get the full effect).

16:10

16:9

Keep in mind, 16:10 is becoming obsolete. It's cheaper and more viable(marketing friendly "1080p!!!") for manufacturers to produce 16:9 panels. Soon here, the only places well see 16:10, are on a few 'gamer' model monitors, and/or your big boy 30" screens. Everyone else will have converted to 16:9.

I suspect this means if you decide to sell it later on, you could get a shiny penny or two for it, because of it's rareness.

This is the one that was on sale few weeks ago for around $260+free shipping:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3326540

It is a nearly identical clone of this one (I actually own this one):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824254043

One major difference is that the Newegg model has a 3-year warranty vs 1-year on the TD model.

I would watch TigerDirect/Newegg and wait for these to drop under $300 again. They do that once a month at least. Trust me, playing Crysis @ 1920x1200[16:10] on a 28-incher at a desktop level is a awesome experience.

I bought an LG W2361V 23 inch that has 2ms refresh. It's perfect for widescreen gaming, but I wish I'd had a bigger monitor, like maybe a Hanns-G 28" !!! But I do want deep blacks, and wasn't sure about the quality of the Hanns-G. I like my LG which I bought out of Best Buy (easy solution I suppose). I'll keep it for a year or two until the bigger screens come in more popular.
