Should I replace my power supply?

Hey guys so I was thinking about replacing my power supply when I do new build in the next couple of months.

It has been running strong for four years now and has powered two build's the first one being a workstation pc with dual xeon x5450's, both a gtx 570 then a 960(upgrade), two hard drives and 8 gbs of ram and now it's powering my current system which is an FX 8320, gtx 970, 16 gbs of ram, two hard drives and five case fans.

The unit is 800 watts delta electronics with 4 12 volt rails with 18 amps per rail and its still going strong but I bought it used and have owned for four years so I don't know how much life it has.

Also I do not run my pc 24 hours a day normally 2 to 3 hours a day and I shut it down and unplug it when it's not beeing used(can never be to cautious).

So what do you guys think?

I would unless you are on an extremely tight budget and depending on the new build, your new psu would likely be sub $100. I generally will go 4 - 5 years before upgrading the PSU unless something comes along that screams 'must have'.

Yeah I was thinking about buying the same delta psu since they are cheap and very reliable despite beeing ugly lol.

I have had 2 units the one I am currently using and another one that lasted for 5 years until I retired it and forgot that I had it left it in my shed for 6 months which killed it due to condensation.

That 80+ standard rating on it is bogus also no mention of any sort of protections that it has built in so if it does go poo it could potentially take out everything else in your PC get rid of it and don't buy another buy a proper name brand PSU not some jank shitter that HP uses

Are you sure? Delta electronics is actually a top tier manufacturer (they are the OEM that made Antec's best units), and I find it highly unlikely they would fake a rating.

That said, old PSU is old. Used old PSU is even older.

You are correct, Delta is one of the best psu manufacturer's in the world, but we don't hear of them because they mostly make oem and server/workstation power supplies.

I used to work in a data center and most Dell and Hp server psu's where Delta's.

I plan picking another one up when I start my build and keep my current one as a backup.

It is not bogus unless the entire supply is a counterfeit, and I highly doubt that. Still, plain (white) 80 Plus certification is the lowest level 80 PLUS certification a PSU can get. So while better than no certification, it really is nothing to write home about.

Now of course, most supplies are incapable of achieving maximum output on all output rails simultaneously. But to me, their math still does not add up.

That said, that is all off topic.

To answer the OP's question, when I do a "new build" that typically includes a new PSU. If I am "upgrading" an existing build, I might keep the old supply - IF its quality matches or exceeds the quality of my new components, and of course, it is fully capable of supporting the power demands (including connectors) of my new components.

I don't however, replace a supply just because it is X number of years old.

This is normal, isn't it, and never adds up. For the reasoning you already mentioned... incapable of achieving max output on the rails simultaneously.

I also wonder if it is a true 4 rail 12V.... most of the time they aren't truly split rails and can go well over the rating for each (obviously while not ecplising the total)

Yeah, it never adds up completely, but I just looked at the label of a EVGA 500W supply I have in my hand. It shows total combined +12V as 41.6A x 12V = 499.2W. So they rounded up to 500W and I'm okay with that, and it makes sense.

They don't add in the +3.3 or 5V for the total (same as with that Delta). But again, if you add up the total 12V on that Delta 800W supply, it comes to 864W, not 800W. The EVGA uses similar math to an Antec 620W I have sitting here too.

At least Delta is going in the right direction. It is better rate the supply conservatively instead of marketing it as a 920W supply.

Delta does in fact make some of the best Power Supplies. But that can be said of most any OEM or vendor. Making the best, doesn't eliminate the possibility that anything they made to order doesn't fit into the Good, Fair or crappy categories. And yes voltages never add up an rails is not something to concern yourself with other than "having enough amps". For a while posers were saying the single rail is the only way to go ... not at all

We (Son No. 3) have a Delta made Antec CP-850 that was ridiculously priced and running SLI system every day for long hours system since 2011 ... has had GFX card updates twice but otherwise running strong.... among the best PSUs I have ever owned and definitely one of the quietest and cheapest.

A 970 build generally requires a 500 watter.

A new build, with an old psu, that doesn't match comfortably.
Already mentioned, put it in a closet as a spare, and get a new psu for a new build.
I use an old psu, but upgraded my system over the years many times. So when I finally go for a new build (probably 2019) I will get a new psu also.
I don't mind running it for 10 years, but I do mind using a 10 year old unit for a brand new build.
Second hand bought and used for 4 years could be a unit of 6 or 7 years old, probably still sufficient, but not lasting for another 6 or 8 years.
And at present, that's how long you can do with that new build, at least if you get a $400 cpu and $200 motherboard.

No, it works fine. I guess I'm just paranoid since I am doing a new build and I have been using my current psu for 4 years now so I wanted to see if I should replace it.

I have made up my mind I will pick up a newer unit and keep my current one as a back up.

Yup I'm sure Plugload solutions does not have a listing for it therefore it was never tested so even if it was a Antec 800W PSU that was tested Delta can not transfer the 80+ rating they have to test the unit under their own brand name
