Should I RMA my video card?

Recently I bought my brother a Powercolor Radeon HD 5770 512MB GDDR5

for Christmas but now he's telling me that he's getting this big blank white screen whenever he tries to do anything mildly intensive, like viewing a large picture. The GPU runs at 38 celsius idle, 50 celcius load on about 70% fan power and is mildly overclocked using Catalyst (using 9.12). The PSU is an OCZ ModXStream 500w PSU which until recently had a 8800GT running in there just fine.

So do you think that this video card is defective and I should RMA this thing?

remove the overclock, some cards crash with a mild overclock, also try different drivers or run drivercleaner then reinstall drivers

i say test it in your PC first, its possible his PSU is failing (but its specs should be good enough for a 5770)

bad card/needing RMA is likely, however.

try diff PSU, remove the OC and see, there is a possibility that PSU you have doesn't have the balls to produce the amperage needed.

now I feel dumb, the max Catalyst overclock is unstable (it was a rather large overclock for Catalyst actually). I guess I got spoiled by moving from a 4770 to a 5850. Both cards overclock VERY well and with great stability with Catalyst.

first lower the clock speeds and check whether the problem persists ... next try an old driver ... 9.10/9.11

or swap in another VGA and check whether its the VGA (your old 8800GT if u have it still) ... if so RMA it ...

Hey don't blame me! My brother did it, I just bought him the thing. I called him and told him to put it back to default! And thankfully it was just a stability issue, I was also worried about any damage that this potentially could have caused. Thanks! :toast:
