I have been thinking of upgrading my PC lately but i am unsure if i can just upgrade instead of purchasing an entirely new PC. What parts can i keep and which parts should i get rid of?

These are my current specs:
Power Supply: Corsair CX 750M, 750W PSU
CPU: Inter Core i7-4790k
Motherboard: MSI B85M-E45, Socket 1150
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz 8GB CL9
GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming 4GB
SSD: Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB 2.5" OEM
SSD 2: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5GB SSD
Operating System: Windows 8.1 64bit.

Thanks in advance. :)

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Should you? That is for you to answer, really... Does the PC work for your uses? IF yes, then of course I wouldn't upgrade.

It really depends on your uses though. I have to imagine things are fine. Perhaps gaming on Ultra at 1080p may not be where you want it with the 970, so you can upgrade the GPU. You have an unlocked processor but a board that doesn't allow overclocking I believe. You can spend $120 and get a board that overclocks and overclock that CPU...

With your board you should be able to at least get all cores to clock to the maximum turbo frequency, so 4ghz on all cores. Getting a new board and a cooler, if you don't have one already, probably isn't the best performance for dollar upgrade as another .5ghz on your cpu won't see much of a performance increase. Your money is probably better spent if invested in a gpu and maybe some more ram.

What's the goal? Any specific reason why you are considering an upgrade?
That would certainly help us provide personal insight.

Dude, you're fine. More RAM is more RAM, but you're unlikely to see a big difference. Two years ago I bought 16GB of RAM for $70, good luck finding it for that price now! I have a 970 as well and while I've been feeling the upgrade itch, the VEGA cards don't look like they'll be affordable anytime soon. IDK about you, but I bought my 970 in October of 2015, for $300, and it still gives me 60 plus frames on current titles on high/ultra settings at 1080p.

EDIT: Just SMH at the price of my RAM now.

And the ram is DDR 3 which is a waste of $ at this point

Save for a new platform in a year or two.

We all get the itch. Just buy a monitor maybe?

isnt the 1050 slower.... and 1060 not much faster than a 970?

1060 slightly edges out the 980 and is a fair bit quicker than a 970 especially in higher resolutions.
I'd make the jump to a 1070 though, then you'll notice the difference so long as you play the right titles.

I find myself cranking up the resolution scaling in BF4 to bring my FPS down to avoid enabling vsync and avoid page tearing.

isnt the 1050 slower.... and 1060 not much faster than a 970?

Pretty much yeah.

Example framerates (all ultra at 1080P):

Mass Effect Andromeda:
1050: 20 fps
970: 50 fps
1060: 55 fps
1070: 73 fps

Watchdogs 2:
1050: 20 fps
970: 35 fps
1060: 48 fps
1070: 63 fps

How superior the 1060 is to the 970 varies game to game, but it's definitely superior, and it's definitely the card I'd recommend people buy for 1080P gaming, but I'm not convinced it's superior to a 970 by a large enough margin to merit upgrading from one to the other.

1070 is a solid card, but if someone has a 60 hz 1080P monitor I don't feel it's a great purchase. I can buy a 1060 for ~$230, 1070's start around $440.

You can basically get 2 1060's for the price of a 1070, and while 1060's do not officially support SLI, you can technically setup a Dual-1060 setup, and it will outperform a 1080, let alone a 1070.

Source for Dual-1060 benchmarks: http://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2519-gtx-1060-sli-benchmark-in-ashes-multi-gpu

And no, I'm not suggesting someone try and use 2 1060's, I know it will give no benefits in almost all games, but I feel that benchmark exemplifies that the 1060 is a much better bang for buck videocard than a 1070 is.

GTX 980 launch price: $550
GTX 1060 launch price: $250

1060 > 980 in terms of performance.

As such, I would personally wager that you could buy a 1060 now for $230, and then buy a Volta GPU next year at some point for $200ish that would outmuscle a GTX 1070, yet you'd get both cards for roughly the same combined price as a 1070, and be able to sell the 1060 at such point to be able to recoup part of its cost, or give it away, use it in a second rig, etc.

it aint gonna work on games with poor sli suport but a cheap upgrade option could be another used 970 and run 970 sli..

on the last generation of cards 970 sli always did well in the benchmarks.. i think lower mid range cards (970) in sli doing so well in the benchmarks is why nvidia killed sli suport on the 1060. which is todays equivalent in the price range..

i am running a pair of last generation 980 TI cards in sli mode.. there still isnt anything out there yet that temps me to replace them except a pair of 1080 TI cards and the cost of doing that would be way too much for any gains i would see..

Yeah SLi isn't worth it due to poor SLi configuration on games. A single card is all it's needed

if you have the itch dude i would look at better cooling. gpu prices are still fucked up and you will not get any massive gains from a new platform for gaming :|

if you get some quality cooling it will at least out live this build and cool any future systems you might get :)
