Hey guys.

Ive finaly got myself 500 Euro saved up and can finaly buy a new motherboard + RAM + CPU.

The thing is...its only 2 months till the new Q9450 comes out and iam unsure if I should wait till then. I want the new system for Sins of a solar empire, Dead Island, Assassins Creed and Age of conan.

If I were to buy a new system now, it would be something like this:

Intel Core 2 QUAD Q6600 or E6850.
OCZ PC6400 2gigs. Not sure of the name...but its worth 140 Euro for 2gigs.
Nforce 650 or 680i.

But....if I were to wait..The CPU would be the Q9450.

Should I wait??
If I bought the system now..would I be able to run Sins of a solar empire and Assassins creed maxed out???

Hmm. Well it's hard to say because the new chips will obviously be better, but will they provide enough of a boost to notice considerable performance differences with newer software titles and 3d applications.

I am pretty confident that the only real boost or upgrade we're going to see, will be with the Nehalem architecture chips coming after the Penryns (Q9450 chips etc.).

When do the new motherboards come out? It might be best to get one of those, but a current chip. Then upgrade the chip later.

Wait. Assassin's Creed isn't out until February and by then you'll have both AMD and Intel quads out.

yep wait if you can.. I couldnt pass up a deal on the q6600 and I needed one now to complete my project Ive started.. also now that I have almost 2 full computers here(besides vid card), I will be able to sell one and while building I will have no downtime.. (besides moving my 1 vid card lol). but the perreyns look very promising.. they clock higher and use less power... much difference the L2 cache will make, we will know when its released.

Irish, don't assume the Penryn's will run the newer 3d applications at "MAX," especially when maximum or highest settings is also end-user defined. You can turn up all the available game features, and have no problems. Then you start forcing extra features through your GPU, and can possibly start suffering performance hits.

I'm willing to say that the newer games are going to be more dependant on a beefy video card, than the performance difference between a 6850/q6600 and a Q9XXX chip.

Hence I said get a new board now, with a current chip, and maybe replace your GTS with a GT or better, GTX. When the new chips come out, you can watch reviews to see how they perform and if you do decide to go with one, it's just a matter of a chip swap.

I dont plan on buying a new GFX card till summer time, its all out on the CPU..like my CPU is ancient now and I cant play any of todays games on max settings or have shadows on or the game will become unplayable! " Crysis for example "

Iam confident enough that I will be able to play Assassins Creed, Sins of a solar empire on max details if I get the CPU. I wont mind having to turn a graphical setting or 2 off in order to get huge battles in sins :p

Iam a person who saves up for a CPU + MOBO + RAM Combo then in 6 to 12 months I splash the cash on a new GFX card + PSU + CASE Combo. In the end..I just get the latest high end gear.

But seriously...would my system be capable of running assassins Creed on MAX details?? on 1280x1024?? Surely I would??

Definately wait. The processor you're talking about and will be 45nm. Even if you don't plan overclocking to the max, the temps will be lower.

I did catch that. I tend to word things in a way that only I understand lol. What I meant was because the release date is February, I would wait to see what CPUs are out when it does come out, that way you can make the most informed decision then. So you end up with the best CPU for your money, and the one that will help you to run AC at max :)
