From what I've seen about the new 9800's, I'd say go for the 8800gts g92 (thats what I did). Even in the last month they have dropped a good bit in price, and performance is top notch!

yeah this is true, they can keep up with a 3870x2, but i dont want to be screwed like i was when i bought my last card, and the GT came out a week later and it was cheaper and faster than my card.

Thats a tough one. You say you don't have a GPU right now, so I say get one.
I'd say go with Palit brand. Some pretty nice stuff right there!

I use the ECS 8800GT Passive and love it. (especially the temps,40s under load) Im gonna be getting a second one next week.

(close to GTX for under $200, its a steal)

The 8800gts(g92) is currently seeming very similar to the upcoming 9800gtx. It would probably be safe to go with that. If you want, you could go evga (I have one of these(and its awesome)) and use the step-up program to get a 9xxx if it seems worth it.

I'm in the same boat as you. Should one wait for 9800/4xxx line ups from nVidia/AMD or just get whatever is on the market right now.

I'm not sure which to pick myself, 8800GT or 9600GT.

Trust me, I highly doubt the 9800GT will be 300$ lol just get a G92 GTS if you have the money for one.

the later 8800gt and the 8800gts were really 9xxx series card brought forward early at cheaper prices to kick the ati 3870 series in the nuts..

being as the 9600 and 8800gt are much the same thing there should be a price advantage for any that remain in the channnels.. the same applies to the 8800gts.. in short there is no real new 9xxxx series.. we have already seen it..

except for the x 2 but thats just 2 of the same..

The new price listing for the 9xxx series posted on here a while back put the bigger 9xxx's in a high dollar range. I would say the 8800gts for $270 is the way to go. Or get a $170-$180 3870 card and change the cooler and give it a pencil vmod, its not bad for the $$$.
