Should we expect mainstream 6 and 8 core processors in Intel's Skylake lineup scheduled for 2H 2015?

If by mainstream you mean commonly used and affordable like the 4 core CPUs are today then I doubt it. Intel charges a premium for their 6 core CPUs and they charge a lot for more for their 8 core CPUs. I doubt you will see very many PCs being sold for business or personal use with 6 or 8 core Skylakes.

I dont think so Skylake will only bring DDR 4 to the mainstream setup.

For 6-8 core will only be on LGA 2011 ver. 3 just as Haswell-E is today.

^Yep, same thing I read. I don't suspect any budget platform Intel chips will go past 4 physical cores for some time. The reason being the "next gen" console APUs, while having more cores, are also slower chips. Once a ported game is coded properly (good usage per core) to run on 4 decent Intel cores, it's pretty much equivalent if not better than anything a PS4 or Xone can handle.

The main thing PC needs for gaming is memory unification and low level API, and those are coming. Hopefully they'll work as intended and claimed.

No....but I really, really want it for video processing. So much so if HEDT was not relegated to Haswell/Broadwell for wayyy too long (as far into 2016 as the roadmap stretches), I would absolutely spring for it. I agree skylake-s will be 4 only.

As it sits, prolly going to end up with a Skylake 4 core, as it just appears to make the most sense. I'm just glad it appears there will be K models. I would be pissed if we were stuck with Haswell-E and only Broadwell 65w for desktop overclockers until 2016.

Post next (through skylake-s/Broadwell-E) gen though, I think all bets are off. Zen 'could' be amazing with 8 better-ipc cores targeted at desktop. Intel will have 10nm for post skylake (which at some point really has to mean more cores, even for skylake-e).

IOW, we're not there yet (>4 core consumer parts other than amd's current setup)...but we're close.

If I had to guess then I would say no because they need to keep the high end platform relevant and offering a 6 core (or 8) on the mainstream would make it less relevant right now.

That being said, they may offer a 6 core high end on the mainstream sometime soon but I don't think skylake is going to be that platform.

I'd say there is a fair possibility we'll see an i7 hexa-core in the mainstream line. Probably more a 'crossover' SKU in that you can invest in the cheaper LGA1151 platform and still get a hexa-core at a lower price entry point, if you don't require quad-channel or as many PCIe lanes, or dive into the more expensive LGA2011 platform, if you do. But it IS Intel here and AMD isn't throwing up a lot of competition (Zen eta 2016+?), so may still only see quad-cores in the mainstream segment.
