[SOLVED]Silver coil corroded?

Hi,

My WC setup's been running for 48 hours. I noticed something weird with the silver coil in reservoir.

I used demineralised water btw.

what the hell is that?

"What the hell is that?" is right. Why do you have a silver coil in your reservoir in the first place?

Antibacterial? I thought a lot of WC people use it instead of the chemicals.

Can you take a better picture? The bottom image looks blurred and I don't think corroded silver should look brown, Ag+ should look black in colour.

Yea, I have one in my reservoir, but I bend it so it cant fit through the barbs but sits at the bottom out of sight.

I've told people before and I told people again, silver coils are no good for long term use. They need to be regularly cleaned with a nylon scrub-brush to wipe off any corrosion that WILL occur. There's no question that it will happen.

Silver water in the loop in small amounts will do more than the same thing, but might cost a bit more.

Hmm, if you add a zinc piece in the loop, theoretically it will corrode the zinc piece instead of the silver piece, keeping the silver piece nice and clean. Care to try?

But it's been only two days.

Anyway, I got it out of the reservoir.

I peeled off the 'thing' with cutter. It looks like a chunk of something.

what should I do now? Drain the loop? add biocide?

Silver oxidizes anyway. It will require maintenance.

Put the silver back in, expect to do this again.

Clean it and put it back in? I think there is 'something' in the water and the silver happened to catch it. :wtf:

If you're afraid, drain the loop, put the silver back in, fill the loop with distilled water. That thing you pulled off wasn't alive at any point, so it's just simple chemistry. Something in your loop is causing a portion of the silver, which is not entirely silver, to corrode, and water makes solid silver do really crappy things anyway. Do not worry.

Yeah, but the theory behind it is that if you attach a piece of zinc to the silver, the zinc will corrode in the place of the silver like so:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacrificial_anode

I have not tried it yet, someone please try?

Wouldn't you have to find metals that perform like zinc in relation to iron, but with respect to silver? The example is nice, but there's more to it than just adding zinc haphazard-like.

this is supposed to be something like colloidal silver anti fungal anti bacterial shoulda just saved ya self some money and used a few drops of detol as demineralization of water doesn't get rid of Bacteria or fungus unless it's also been distilled

Well, silver is less reactive than iron, so theoretically it should work since that the zinc will still displace silver when it comes to reacting. I think the zinc piece will need to be on contact with the silver piece though.

I'd seriously pop you in da face for suggesting someone put that in their loop. Please do not make such hasty comments that could cost someone their water loop.

Good suggestion and observation. I reread and went looking for myself elsewhere to get clarification.

So something is not right with my loop? Maybe I didn't clean it up right. Most of the parts are second hand apart from the rad.

Here's my setup.

I'd take every block apart and check for more corrosion.

:wtf: umm, how do I clean it then? Toothbrush?

If it doesn't come off with some sort of hard plastic scrubber then you'll want to find someone who knows their chemistry to suggest an acid treatment, or cleaning solution for the specific metal. This is basically what I'd be afraid of happening...

and the difference between Detol and some over priced name brand bio/fungicide you buy at ya local / online PC parts store pretty much nothing they both do the same thing
it doesn't react with metals rubber or plastic so it's not going to affect the copper or rubber seals or hoses learn to think outside the box or do you enjoy wasting money atleast i didn't say use half a gallon of Bleach now that would deserve as you say a pop in the face
