Why do I have this bad feeling about SilverLight?

When it first came out I downloaded it because NetFlix started using it. I saw no improvement in quality from the NetFlix viewer and now I had this huge pig program embedded into my OS!

Now, Amazon is forcing me to download it in order to watch a movie.

Does it do anything better now? Will it fit a bit more seamlessly in W8, vs. W7?

Just need a little push to do it or avoid it, REALLY on the Fence with this.

It's Microsoft's equivalent of Flash. There's nothing wrong with it. Performance should be more or less the same across all browsers (like Flash).

It's worse than Flash, because it doesn't have hardware acceleration or doesn't work properly, I've tried it on an AMD E-350 & video playback is choppy.

It's a bug specifically with AMD Fusion CPUs. Microsoft has looked into it and said they can't fix it in the current version of Silverlight. Silverlight 6 might fix it.

Silverlight has always been 2D hardware accelerated. Silverlight 5 added 3D hardware acceleration.

I have many more issue's with flash than Silverlight and i use them both every other day, maybe it's youtube but get sick of flash errors their that's for sure.

I use it frequently as my sattelite TV provider uses it as the platform for it's mobile service and I have never had any issues, it's also quite a small download, not sure the exact size but it only took about 8 seconds to download.

Just installed it as i have just put windows 8.1 on the pc and from what i remeber the file size for silverlight was around 10MB's followed by a 12 to 14MB patch so its not exactly a big file and no bogger than flash player.

I just remember having problems with it, when it first came out. Kinda left a bad taste. So, far ver.5 seems to work fine.

What will happen if I go Linux with this thing? Will Silverlight work then? Will streaming movies be a thing of the past w/out Silverlight?

It's much simpler to use Netflix on Ubuntu with the new "Netflix Desktop App". It uses wine and in early versions wine and netflix didn't mix well, but the latest version it works great. :toast:
