SilverStone's new Mammoth Series MMS02 is an IP68-certified 2.5-inch SATA to USB enclosure that can protect your HDD or SSD from the elements (at least dust and water). It was first unveiled at the 2017 International CES, but is seeing a worldwide launch over a year later. You can enclose a 9.5 mm or 7 mm-thick 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD, which connects to a SATA 6 Gbps backplane internally. The enclosure then connects to the host machine over 10 Gbps USB 3.1 gen 2, so there's no bandwidth bottleneck. SilverStone even threw in UASP (USB-attached SCSI protocol) support, all thanks to a VIA Labs VL715 controller at the helm.
A single cable provides both power and host connectivity. 4.2 m long cables are included for both type-A and type-C ports. When not plugged in, simply slide over the connector shutter for water-resistance. When connected, it's designed to be spill-proof. The main body is made of aluminium, for better heat dissipation than plastic. Measuring 105 mm x 16 mm x 164.5 mm (WxHxD), or about the size of a poorly designed 5.5-inch smartphone, it dry-weighs 20 g. The company didn't reveal pricing.
