Simplifying updates for Windows 7 and 8.1

While we’ve spent a lot of time over the past year talking about Windows 10 (including new roadmap details), we know that organizations are still working with Windows 7 too, regularly updating their Windows 7 SP1 images to include the latest updates, app versions, and more. For those that are involved in that process, you’ve probably seen a display like this too many times:

New Windows 7 SP1 convenience rollup makes image creation much faster

We’re happy to announce today that we’re making available a new convenience rollup for Windows 7 SP1 that will help. This convenience rollup package, available to download from http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=3125574, contains all the security and non-security fixes released since the release of Windows 7 SP1 that are suitable for general distribution, up through April 2016. Install this one update, and then you only need new updates released after April 2016.

And since this update can be injected into Windows 7 SP1 media, it’s fully supported to mount a Windows 7 SP1 image (WIM file), then inject this update into it. See https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744559(v=ws.10).aspx for the details of how to do this.

This convenience update is completely optional; it doesn’t have to be installed and won’t even be offered via Windows Update – you can choose whether or not you want to use it.

To apply this update, you must install the April 2015 servicing stack update for Windows 7 (KB3020369). You can read more about the Convenience rollup update for Windows 7 SP1 here.

We hope that you find this convenience rollup package useful. This same convenience rollup also applies to Windows Server 2008 R2.

Monthly Rollups

Also today we are announcing that non-security updates for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 (as well as Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2) will be available as a monthly rollup (fixes rolled up together into a single update). Each month, we will release a single update containing all of the non-security fixes for that month. We are making this change – shifting to rollup updates, to improve the reliability and quality of our updates.

These fixes will be available through Windows Update, WSUS, and SCCM as well as the Microsoft Update catalog. We hope this monthly rollup update simplifies your process of keeping Windows 7, and 8.1 up-to-date.

Simplifying finding and downloading updates

Updates have historically been published on the Microsoft Download Center and the Microsoft Update Catalog. Security Bulletins have linked directly to update packages on the Microsoft Download Center. To simplify this, within the next few months Windows updates will no longer be available from the Microsoft Download Center. Security bulletins will continue to link directly to the updates, but will point to the packages on the Microsoft Update Catalog instead of the Microsoft Download Center. Customers that use tools linking to the Microsoft Download Center should follow the links provided in the Security Bulletins or search directly on the Microsoft Update Catalog.

For those who aren’t familiar with the Microsoft Update Catalog website, note that it still requires using Internet Explorer at this point because of an ActiveX control used. Later this summer, we will be updating the site to eliminate the ActiveX control in order to support other browsers.

As always, all updates will still be available via WSUS, SCCM, and Windows Update – this change is only for manual downloads.

This ranges from from "great" (effectively SP2) to "meh" (not avaliable through Windows Update) to full on "choking on rage" (mentioning the Update Catalog). I cannot emphasize enough how terrible the Update Catalog is.

I read about this yesterday, and my thoughts also were that this is not an improvement. If you need to manually get and install updates, they have made it more difficult.

It seems like yet another example of making life diffficult for non-W10 people to encourage them to upgrade.

Just experienced this myself. I wanted to download the update because this is a massive problem and fresh installs of Windows 7 are still in my future. I don't have a problem using IE11 but...
1. I add the download to my cart.
2. Click on basket.
3. Click on download.
4. Window pops up asking to browse for folder.
5. Click on it, UAC pops up demanding admin password. "No problem," I thought.
6. Enter admin password. Nothing happens.
7. Close window and repeat steps 3-6. Getting frustrated now.
8. Right-click and select refresh.
9. Repeat steps 4-6.
10. WTF?
11. Come to the sad realization I'll have to sign off and sign in as the admin account just to download a file.
12. Give up.

Terrible indeed. I'll have to do it eventually though.

Not to mention the downloads do not appear among the browser downloads, or that you need to stay on the site during the download, and that it doesn't have indications on how long you've got left on the download. The last bit might only be true for some files though.

To use this Web site's full functionality, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later.

Pops up both in IE and Chrome. I guess there is no way to pre-download the update, so I can install it whenever I need it.

Finally got around to creating a Windows 7 rollup image.
1. Download Windows 7 Professional SP1 (SP1 is very, very important because there's no way to offline update gold to SP1).
2. Mount the ISO and extract it somewhere.
3. Create a folder "C:\test"
4. Copy "\sources\install.wim" from the mounted ISO and place it in "C:\test"
5. Download KB3020369 and place the MSU in "C:\test"
6. Download KB3125574 and place the MSU in "C:\test" but NOTE, this step requires Internet Explorer (tested with 11) running from an administrator account. You can't use a limited user account and log in when prompted. It will do nothing if you do.
7. Create the folder "C:\test\offline"
8. Start the Command Prompt as administrator.
9. The next 4 steps are ran in the command prompt. Mount install.wim:

dism /mount-wim /wimfile:"c:\test\install.wim" /index:1 /mountdir:"c:\test\offline"

10. Apply the PackageManager patch and then begin applying the rollup. Note: this will fail at 33.3%!

Will be interesting to see if this fixes the problem with Windows Update taking literally hours to scan for updates. Happens after a fresh SP1 install or an install that's had lots of patches applied, but will tend to go away as the scan/patch loop is gone round a couple of times... until the next time.

After lots of googling there's no resolution for this, even with Microsoft's official fixit, so I do wonder if this is Microsoft's underhand way to nudge people towards W10 which unsurprisingly updates properly.

Windows XP/Vista/7 actually didn't take long to search for updates until Windows 10 launched. Then bam, one core to 100% load for hours.

Got around XP's brokenness by using a 3rd party script to build a Windows Update installer that Microsoft refused to just make available for download. Then Windows Update broke completely in XP because of a security certificate expiring. They eventually got that fixed but Windows Update Agent, as far as I know, still needs to be rebuilt from scratch because it is still not available. Vista has to sit for about 6-8 hours when it used to be maybe an hour, tops.

Windows 7 has to sit for at least 12 hours when it used to be an hour or two--and this is with Service Pack 1 installed from image.

I'm positive it isn't merely a coincidence because it's not like 100 updates came out in a month. Each additional update shouldn't add more than a minute to discover. If memory serves, there are about 250 updates for Windows 7 and Windows Vista. 2 hours tops, like it was. Now it's taking many minutes per update. Definitely deliberate.

The key: don't restart. It has to run continuous until a) it shows it found the updates or b) the power button changed to say "update and shutdown." If the latter, just do it because the Windows Update screen you're looking at won't change. If the former, proceed as normal. If it doesn't reach that point, it has to start over from the beginning after the computer turns on.

Nope, still the same. I injected these two updates into ISO image and did clean install on a virtual machine, now searching for updates for last ~45 minutes and still nothing. The issue seems to be on the other end - MS Update servers.

I did updates 2 days ago on a desktop and laptop and had no problem finding updates, once I checked the details on what each one was and ticked the boxes I clicked install and that took ages showing 0 progress. Eventually that changed to a restart screen and had no problems from there.

Given that a licence is perpetual, I think this "technical problem" might give Microsoft legal problems eventually. The scan times are getting progressively longer, where at some point it will render the OS useless which could potentially (and hopefully) lead to a class action lawsuit.

@CAPSLOCKSTUCK Caps, I'll second that advice. There's no option but just to leave it scanning continuously unfortunately. I saw an article or forum post which reckoned that installing a particular update manually would resolve this, but I think if it had worked properly then it would have been all over the internet by now.

It's to the desktop now but doesn't have any network access. It is only showing two updates installed:
Update for Microsoft Windows
Hotfix for Microsoft Windows

Neither are the rollup. That said, it doesn't show Service Pack 1 either which was already embedded in the image, nor the KB3020369 update which is a prerequisite for the rollup. It might be there and working but I won't know until I build my driver disk for this computer.

That was on a Latitude E6410. I just tried the same disk on a Latitude E6400 (quite different in terms of drivers) and it is spitting out the same 0x8007000E error. I have a theory that it happened because I merged the original OEM Win7 gold with an Install.wim extracted from a Microsoft SP1 disk but this has been a 100% failure.

0x8007000E is fixed by KB3102810! 229 important and 9 optionals updates found in under 5 minutes!

Going to try putting that into the slipstream as well and if it works, all should be...as it should be. That said, that's a lot of updates post-rollup. I wonder if they aren't installed but they're already available.

Edit: Can't edit the post with the instructions so here is an updated instruction list. Note that these are for x86. The DISM commands need to be adjusted for other platforms:

It did not actually *install* the three updates in the slipstream. I'm thinking it's better to forgo slipstream entirely and install this stuff from batch.

Edit: I installed the three updates manually and Windows Update is back to its usual sit-there-forever.

Edit: Sat for about an hour and found 85 + 9 updates. That is an improvement over previous but slipstreaming did no good.
