I'm thinking about a new game purchase and I'm really looking into Sins of a Solar Empire. PC Gamer seems to love the game, and most other reviews do as well. The graphics look good (takes me back to the Homeworld days). Anyway, what do you guys think about this game? Graphically? How's the story line?

it's got a great rating, it's one of those sleeper hits. the publisher is Stardock who is also a Developer (Galactic Civilization Series) they also made some Applications like Windows Blinds, Tweak Vista and the Alienware Theme Manager integrated into there desktops I think. they are popular for there community support and anti-copy protection they hired Ironclad to create Sins of a Solar Empire a new developer based in Canada composed of on ex-Rockstar employees most likely from Rockstar Vancouver. Canada only has a handful of developers but they are some of the best in the industry like:

Relic Entertainment (Company of Heroes, Dawn of War Series, Warhammer Series, Homeworld Series, Impossible Creatures)
Ubisoft Montreal (Splinter Cell 1 3 4, Prince of Persia Series, Myst IV, Rainbow Six Series, Assassins Creed)
Digital Extremes (Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004)
Digital Illusions (Battlefield 1942)
Bioware (Neverwinter Nights, Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale Series, Baldur's Gate Series, Star Wars Knights of the old Republic, Jade Empire, Mass Effect)
Ironclad (Sins of a Solar Empire)
Radical Games (Scarface)

also some up coming games from Canadian Developers like Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Company of Heroes Online, Dawn of War 2, Prince of Persia Prodigy, Far Cry 2, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3 and a "unknown" title by Bioware working with Lucas Arts *cough* rumored to be Star Wars: Knights of the old Republic III.

thats all I know Sorry :(

Great background info on the developer. I had no idea the game was made by the same people who made Galactic Civilizations Series...Those are great games, this on should be good as well.

I've had it since shortly after release...great game, I love it...but it can get time consuming...and those damned pirates can get aggrivating, but it does create a damn good challenge. IMO, definately worth picking up if you want a well-executed space-RTS. Stardock did a great job with this one...like calvary said, it's one of those sleeper hits...and it's sweet!

storyline: none. there is no SP.

Game: yeah it looks OK... the problem is that battles are very, very dull. some things happen to fast while others too slow, it feels the pace is off.

Its not a bad game, i just think its a patch or two away from being up to my standards.

pretty good game..just be prepared to use the same 3 units all the time, as there is very little ship variety. coolest part is the battlecruisers...but they arent even that detailed imo

edit: oh, and the game is completely unrealistic...planets dont move around the sun at all they just stay still..year after year. if only that were true in real life, ey? eternal fall...ahhh :)

I went over to a friends house and played this game...I decided against buying it. I bought the civilization iv: complete pack instead. Completely different game, yes, I know...However, it's extremely fun.

It has good reviews indeed, and StarDock has some nice stuff (Galciv2 is very addictive) though this game bored me severely. Once you capture a few systems there is no progress anymore, and battles are extremely boring.

Good choice, very time consuming though :)

Civ is a good choice, I'm sure you'll be content with your purchase.

If you can find Sins for really cheap you may want to snag it and give it a shot tho...yeah it's true there's no story, the SP mode is vs AI(s)...but for me that's good enough for the kind of game it is...I didn't want or need a story when I got it...just wanted to have large skirmishes...but rounds do take forever to complete...anywhere from a couple of hours to over 6 depending on number of systems, enemies and such...MP games are good fun, but can be a little on the long side and discouraging for those not wanting to dedicate an entire night to the game.

I still say it's a good game, but like said earlier a couple of patches to change things up definately wouldn't hurt!
