Looking to upgrade the old workhorse, pretty much desired that i want a 5820k for the CPU (or a 5930k) since i want a Samsung xp941 for storage (no more S-ata cables)

Am going to use the two 290X in CF as well.

Question is, what is a good motherboard? have been looking at the MSI x99 Plus, as it fits my needs, but the mPower is not that much more, and i do like to overclock (cooling is not an issue, big radiator is big ), so are there any known faults with the two MSI boards, or is there any other boards thats better for the same money?

The plus is a great fit for a decent motherboard to change complement a chip like the 5820K. Honestly if you do not want the extra PCI-E, get the 5820K and put it with either the MSI x99 Sli or the Asus X99 A board which is also a great board.

Hmm, the Asus X99 A board costs the same as the MSI mPower here, the question boils down to if the X99 A or the mPower can get a higher OC than a SLI Plus

probably going to order a xp941 today, and order the rest off the parts (cpu. mobo and ram) when it manages to cross the globe and get through the Norwegian customs (my prediction: 3 days travel from Aus to Nor, two weeks in customs and fore days from Oslo to me)

Well it depends honestly what would benefit more on the chips because both those boards have a very distinctive difference when it comes to overclocking.

1: The MSI Mpower has a 12Phase Power Delivery system which should allow for cleaner power delivery to the CPU which can lead to better overclocking but normally matters more on the extreme limits.

2: All the Asus boards on the X99 platform contain the new overclock socket which allows for extra pins on the chips to be used to achieve better overclocking results on all the SKT 2011-3 chips. So far it has proven to be more than a concept and actually works pretty well though it depends overall where you look. I would say if your concerned about overclocking and want to get a good value and overclocking board to complement a 5820K, get the Asus board as it will probably allow for a better overclock on that chip with less voltages based on the findings I have seen so far.

hmm, maybe i will have to get over my aversion for Asus then (have had 2 Asus boards that died on me; both NF4 boards tho), probably wont have it running on the ragged edge OC vice. Seeing as i just order my xp941 i will wait until i have it for ordering the rest of the system, time to dig up all the review i can find.
