I used to play Skyrim using HD5970, on ultra high settings with additional hi-texture mods, and 2560x1440 resolution.

If I remember correctly it never went below 40... Actually it used to go down only in highly populated outdoor areas like Whiterun marketplace and I attributed that to my cpu bottlenecking the card since I was using an E8400 with it.

Can you be more specific? What type of fps are you getting and where (indoors, outdoors in towns, outdoors in forest etc)?

Are you getting low frame rates only in Skyrim or is it happening in other games as well?

It shouldn't be that bad even if CF isn't working. I remember when Skyrim was released the driver for the 5970 wasn't enabling CF, but I never got 10 fps, more like 25 and in the worst area which was Whiterun market as I said before...

Have you checked CCC perhaps you have some settings forced from there? Like an insane amount of AA or something?

I wish I could check more in detail for you but I don't have Skyrim installed on the E8400/HD5970 pc anymore...

Try running GPU-Z in the background while running Skyrim, then alt-tab out of the game and check the clocks and the gpu load.

8xAA is your problem

there are alternatives that work better like SMAA injector if you use mods like ENB 8xAA wont even work right causing problems

drop to 2x AA run native res or use SMAA injector your performance will increase dramatically or it should.

SMAA + ENB if configured correctly will look better than 8xMSAA and offer you better shadows and lighting.

but Vanilla game the MSAA implementation is pretty much garbage. has been for a long time as far back as Oblivion if memory serves me right.

If that doesnt do the trick you will need to roll back your driver to an earlier version thats more SKyrim friendly.

Welcome to the world of Bethesda / Gamebryo games the engine is not AMD / Ati friendly when concerning multi-gpu solutions.

Holy smokes...
Check your background applications.. is your computer folding or something?
Run msconfig and check what you've got running under the startup tab. Un-tick anything you see suspicious, reboot pc.

8xAA is your problem

His screenshot shows he's running 0xAA (he's running 8xAF but that shouldn't affect performance).

then its a driver issue he needs tio roll back his driver. Also note to self stop using remote access to log into my main rig and then start using the internet that way.. I miss important info apparently

ANyway its a driver issue,

even if crossfire didnt work performance should be a bit higher at High preset

Have you made an INI changes? Such as better shadows / longer draw distances / any mods etc?

also lol GPU load at 92% maybe he got hit by that Bitcoin malware? I would laugh my ass off.

Run malwarebytes just in case. There's a virus going around, a script for hacking bitcoins or something, I think the exe would be iehighutil.exe but it might have a different name.
Malwarebytes should get rid of it.

It causes your exact symptoms - high GPU usage while idle on desktop.

Edit: oops I hadn't read crazyeyesreaper's post...

hmm then probably a driver freaking out.

One thing to keep in mind Morgoth with Bethesda games and AMD gpus the DRIVER means EVERYTHING in terms of performance / reliability / stability. When you look at other games etc, anything Gamebryo is going to be problematic with symptoms getting worse or disappearing depending on the driver you use. Mostly its due to some less than stellar coding in the now 10+ year old Engine bethesda has been milking all this time.

Try with the new driver see what happens. If it doesnt fix it try an older driver from the 12.x line

get single gpu, if you like Skyrim avoid crossfire hell anything Bethesda really,

4870x2 5850 xfire 6970 xfire 6950 xfire all tended to perform like crap in those titles some drivers here and there work but to get say the newest shiny game to run right usually breaks Bethesda's games

I would just say fuck it and get a Titan at $1000 id take Titan overclock it and you get close to 690 / 7990 performance but no scaling issues. Besides SUPPOSEDLY the new GTX 780 is going to be a Titan LE so Titan will still be top dog single GPU.

That or just got Single 7970 its still faster than your 5970 by about 15-20%

5970 to 6990 was 20% 7970 at 1050 core = 6990 push it to 1150 or so you end up about 30% faster than your 5970 on a single card. I just can't see buying a 7990 when they are gonna be rare and AMDs version has extreme coil whine and clock throttle issues.

Agreed with other comments, you have to find a good driver to play Skyrim with proper CFX scaling and you'll still have some microstuttering.

If you really want to play this game with peace of mind go Titan, my setup maxes Skyrim (of course) and scales well even in SLI no frame dips and very smooth.

nVidia has a giant edge over ATI/AMD when talking about Bethesda.

It's also VRAM hungry, I see over 3,5GB on 1600p with 8x MSAA.

Also keep your CPU highly clocked, that game benefits from insanely high clocks.

Still playing it pure until I do *everything* 100%, then I'll start modding. I did this with Morrowind with both it's expansions, and Oblivion with all it's DLC.

Have you tried this?

Run msconfig and check what you've got running under the startup tab. Un-tick anything you see suspicious, reboot pc.

And this? Malwarebytes is free for 12 days.
