Story was first broken by OCW on April 5, 2006 regarding Nvidia's 82.xx and newer Forcewares disabling Uli's PowerExpress SLI driver for M1697 motherboards. This was confirmed in the Epox 1697 review by Jon H. at PC Perspective. Known affected boards are 3 Asrock models - K8SLI, 939SLI and 939SLI32 - and Epox EP-9U1697 GLI. I am unsure how many other lesser known motherboards have implemented 1697 chips with SLI support.

SLI will still work using 81.98 drivers and driver supported scalable video cards. To my understanding, this does not include the 7600 and 7900 lines.

Note to Moderators: Could not decide which forum would be best, Motherboards or Video. Feel free to move to most appropriate forum.

Alas, the non-Asrock Boards (I didn't chekc the Asrock boards, though) by Epox and Abit (UL8 pro) are nowhere to get... did nVidia throw all newer Uli chipsets on a heap, started a bonfire and danced around it, happy to have eliminated the best competing chipset on the market?

I was ready to wait for the UL8 pro to change to socket 939, or for the Epox 1697-thing, but as their launch(?) or availability is delayed further and further, it seems I should

- rather wait for AM2 boards with yet other chipsets, or

- do something really really weird for such an AMD fanboy that I am and go for socket 479M, building a Celeron-M OC-monster.

*sigh*

Did anyone spot a Uli 1697 board or owns a sample and is willing to sell?

You can still buy ASRock ULi based boards. Though I doubt the chipset will be in production much longer.

Just got a mail from EPoX Germany: They will just start delivering the first boards in two weeks' time! And it'll be as cheap as the Asrock SLI-Satan32 or whatsitcalled (60,- €)!

The EPoX has a lousy layout (they always do) but comes in a nice old school green (they always did). HSF on northbridge, but I always exchange them with old super socket 7 heatsinks everyone of us still has in drawers somewhere. Chunkier and better than those Zalman miniature hedgehogs!

Now I'll mail to Abit, let's see if they are ready to ship their UL8 pro, too!
