Slightly OT: Why do all the YouTube stars use water cooling?

Why do all the YouTube (JaysTwoCents, Paul's Hardware, etc.) stars use water cooling (custom loops or AIO)? Almost none of them use air cooling. What? Did air cooling somehow become not cool?

Yeah these youtubers don't need water cooling. Air is just fine but as long as they have the money then just go for it but if one doesn't know how to refill the water then that's on you but again if one has the money to pay a guy to do it then fine

I made the jump to an AIO because of space and ease of maintenance. Its easier to rinse off a rad with it still connected to the loop than a heatsink.

It also just looks nicer and gives me better temps.

I prefer water cooling for a simple reason - an air cooler gets in the way too much, my large hands are always bumping into it when connecting fans, lighting, or changing RAM. For people who do hardware reviews, it simplifies things. Every time you bump into the air cooler, it could screw up the TIM interface, or stress the board. Water cooling works better, is quiet, and looks better. Also, 240mm AIO now as cheap as $60, less than large air coolers.

Jay got his start by building watercooled PCs, so he he just prefers it. Plus, he gets almost all of his water cooling stuff, even the AIOs, for free. So why not use them.

Sponsors. Bequiet,corsair and such want them to show their +$100 product, not the $50 one. Plus they don't care about leakage like we do. Fancy looks will get more people to watch. Like jboyd said, they're tools so who cares.

Bumping into the air cooler won't mess up the TIM and it won't stress the board any amount you have to be concerned about. There is a much greater chance that the pump will fail in an AIO, which have a failure rate of 5%. That's not including possible leakage. Air coolers are great because even if the fan fails your PC won't fry alive. An AIO with a broken pump will idle at 60c and quickly exceed safe limits if load is applied.

High end air coolers are within a few degrees of the best AIO liquid coolers, and the top end AIOs are significantly more expensive. Rest assured, buying an AIO is more like a rental, as the pump will fail one day. They have a limited lifespan. Air coolers are big chunks of metal with which any fan can be used.

I'm personally not a fan of him for the stated reason and the fact that he's an elitist. The few times I've talked with him he's always come off as his is the best way and there can be no questioning of that. There's a reason channels like GamersNexus and HardwareUnboxed are becoming so popular. They present the data with as little opinion as possible and if they are wrong they admit to it. I still remember Jayz original Titan video. This guy is supposed to be a reviewer but the video was essentially a montage of him making amazed looking faces at his rig's graphical performance. And people expect this guy to rate Nvidia fairly? I guess that went out the window when his income comes from reviewing products that Nvidia chooses to give to him. That's not a reviewer, that's the definition of a paid shill. You are getting products from a company under the premise of a wink and a nod that you continue to "favor" their products in your reviews, else your future samples be pulled. When you financially rely on these videos for income, then obviously there is a conflict of interest there.

I'm never leaving my NH-D14 air cooler behind. I am currently rocking 5.2 ghz on my 8600k rock solid stable, with liquid metal and my air cooler and i never break 65 celsius even in benches. and i never have to worry about corrosion or leaks.

That's not a budget build. That's anything but a budget build.

Cause they don't build with budget parts from the ground up.You won't learn about the best price/perfomance HDDs, best $20 air coolers, best bang for the buck cases and PSUs. I've never seen them compare cheap single fans 1060s in terms of overclock/thermals, when they test a budget gpu it's usually the top of the line version of it.

I had heatpipes on TR Macho corrode. Nevertheless, it's extremely rare. I've had D15S for 3 years and it's good as new. Comes with a 6 year warranty, so when I see a clc with 2-3 years that's just poor. CLCs have better temps only cause they're packing 2-4 static pressure oriented fans, while air coolers have 1-2 quiet fans. Get two of the same 1800-2000rpm fans on a noctua D15 and it's gonna blow that CLC
out of the water.

And looks are subjective, I like this much more than flashy clcs with their ugly tubes.

Also, take a look at vrm temps on D15s vs CLCs on 8700K and Asus Rog X Apex (in degrees celcius, clc mounted above cpu)

this gets worse when the clc is monuted as front intake, 4-6 degrees difference.

But mounting the CLC above the cpu sees the performance deteriorate in comparison to front intake (the chart says 6-8 degree difference)

Most popular You Tubers are businesses. It's that simple. If you see things in the background, a lot of the time it is marketing. Presentation, personality and product placement: these are things that make people successful.
If you watch YT, you're contributing to that entire model. I don't want YT because it's an echo chamber, dictated by money or ideology. Plus it's a majority of opinionated morons, clever or not.

As for the water cooling, it's an easy way to make your PC look better than the rest, and once one person does it, people have to catch up.

Was it the machine that originally had the custom watercooling loop?

He uses an EVGA AIO here....

Not trying to defend him or nothing but TBF he probably gets given a tonne of stuff from sponsors to demo or keep for his own rigs to a point where he just doesnt know what to do with them. For instance In this video that I linked. It wasnt actually one of his own or work PCs he was working on but somebody elses and I guess he just threw an AIO in there because he has so many of them and AIOs tend to be less of a hassle to fit/install and you dont suffer from any memory clearance issues that come with big coolers like the Noctua DH15.

but yes... Some youtubers are sponsored by certain brands so theyve got to have some form of product placement relating to their sponsor somewhere.

I know that Linus from Linus Tech Tips has a mishmash of rigs that range from custom watercooling loops on their to conventional cooling as well as the use of AIOs on their test benches.

I had a 6C difference between a 280mm AIO setup and a 120mm air cooler
price difference was many hundreds.

Why? because i repair and resell PC's, and my PC looking flashy helps make me money. Most youtubers get sponsored with this hardware, and the AIO's have a good profit margin - so they'd be pushing them. (always a laugh to see an AIO cooler, an intel K chip, and a friggin H/B series chipset)

Is it worth it? Fuck no. Damn pump on anything but the lowest setting is louder than everything else in my PC.

I fully support advanced air cooling over WC as i use one with a 7900X.

That said, if i had more money, i would switch for WC for looks + extra temps after dilid.
That's gonna happen this summer
