Smart lad though pulling the plug from the wall would be the best

It's funny you mention that he actually went beyond unplugging it from the wall and actually took the computer across the room and put it on his other dresser

@Power Slave sweet avatar

I was looking at the FSP HydroX looks rather nice. or the Hydro G

or a EVGA G1 or G2 but they are MEGA expensive since I bought my G2 (i paid $69) now they are $110 o_O ) i did see one for $95 iirc on amazon.

in regards to the Liquid in the capacitors (i think that is what it came from , or fro mthe smoke it generated) it irritated my hand a bit, but i washed it off with Baking soda & water with dish soap.

you & i had this conversation in the TPU review for this PSU about 3 years ago iirc ;) it might have been a rebate, but even with out the reabate it was under $80 i got lucky. i thin it was before the community opinion of EVGA PSU's increased due to older models not being SO great, but i could be wrong

the FSP units i was looking @ are in the $70-$80 full modular, Japanese Cap's, etc

I got mine for $89 but they (I bought 3) came with a $20 MIR from EVGA so final costs were $69 each.

all i know is i have to replace this sucker ASAP.....this is just unacceptable.

:(

Edit
It blew my mind how low cost the FSP power supplies are. I assume it must be a PR thing because their name isn't too well known as they tend to be a wonderful OEM but not so much as a end user retail seller

I've always found that what I felt were FSP equivalents to known quality PSU's were more expensive, to the tune of 25-33% more.

Mining has also affected PSU prices.

I was just surprised to see EVGA higher end PSU's for over $100 and then the same unit but made by FSP for $30 less. I just assumed that it's the brand-name EVGA that causes the increase in price, although i could be wrong for sure. I'm sure if you asked 10 people born after 1985 who were into computers what product fortron group made they'd have no idea ;)

Samxon aren't the best stuff and the liquid thing is probably electrolyte that ejected from it. Capacitors are generally quite cheap, if you can solder, it's a cheap replacement, assuming it's only this that went south...

Some are not, but the LP SAMXON caps i have tested over the last 2 years have been mostly top notch, Their uf being a little lower than labeled but having a excellent esr.

After testing well over 100 of them and being at least 5+ year old caps. ESR being about the best i have seen from any capacitor and much lower than a lot of the new nic caps out there even the audio ones.

Nowadays the platinum supplies are so cheap I would recommend just getting a platinum model. I have a Seasonic 660W XP2 and my father has a EVGA Supernova P2 650W Platinum, both great. Either are usually on sale between $85-100. Platinum is nice, it gives off barely any heat at all which makes everything run cooler in the case and they don't make any noise. Highly recommend either one.

Edit: don't see either on sale right now sadly

Whatever you do buy check Johnny Guru or Hardware Secrets's reviews they know more about power supplies than the usual reviewer.

edit2: also that seasonic S12II bronze is a good model, I had similar model rebadged as PC Power and Cooling 600 and it was very reliable for the 3 years I ran it, only sold it because I upgraded to my current and I needed a cooler running power supply for the Lian Li's layout.

CX's are crap. CX400 is the only ok CX, that uses the same platform as Antec Earthwatts 500W, Seasonic, tho Taiwanese caps.

I'd never put a CX PSU to my computers.

[sigquote=A Person That Knows a Shitton more about PSUs than 9700 Pro]Also, I want to be very clear once again that the low temp spec does not mean the [CX] unit is crap on a cracker, either. Junk doesn't trip overtemp protection and shut down gracefully. Junk is missing that protection entirely, choosing instead to blow up in a spectacular light show bringing swift death to the computer parts being powered at a level well before the numbers on the side. Corsair doesn't sell junk. At least, not right now. And I find it hard to believe at this point they ever would.[/sigquote]

While I agree that Corsair units are hardly "crap" you have to remember "crap" is a very relative term.

I think a lot more can qualify as "crap" frankly if we add the category of "exploding crap" to the list.

Sorta like this.

Excellent>Good>Not Exploding Crap>Exploding Crap.

Maybe to simplify things we can just call it 80 Plus "crapium" and "explodium" grade PSUs and make a certification process.

PS: I'm kidding... kinda. My point is to illustrate how it's all relative.

No. Exploding crap is the $25 800W ebay deals. And if you buy decent brands you don't even deal with Not Exploding Crap. This includes Corsair, Silverstone and FSP. And crap should be defined as "outside ATX spec", because that is why we have it.

I added a clarification that I was mostly kidding and just trying to drive the relative term thing home. Sorry for the ninja edit.

I don't agree Corsair units of any type are crap except from a value perspective, and then only maybe.

I've seen and owned a few Crap PSU's in my time and I've learned over the years of experience you gets what you pay for so far I have a very nice 80+ silver Silverstone ST75F-P full modular unit that's been doing the work since 2012 3 mobo's 6 GPU's and 4 CPU's later and it's still kicking ass

Here is the thing, like the quote I posted points out, to me crap isn't going to shut down gracefully when something happens. Crap doesn't do that. Crap is the stuff that doesn't have any protections, doesn't even have Active PFC, and isn't at least 80+ Certified. That is crap that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

The CX line, as well as some of the other lower end units from other companies like eVGA, are perfectly fine unit. Yes they are built to a cost, but they have been smart about doing so to make a unit that isn't going to kill your entire system. That that means they aren't crap. There is not relative to that, they are good units. They aren't in the better category, they aren't in the best category, they are just good enough and get the job they are designed to do done.

I've got a CX750 powering my work computer as we speak. It's been in there for years happily working away, the whole time I've been folding 24/7 with it on two GPUs. Right now it is powering a GTX960 and a GTX1060. How old is the CX750 you ask? Well, old enough that when I first put it in the system, it was powering two GTX470s folding 24/7.

This power supply was actually my "shield" so to speak against all those saying the CX model from corsair are shit ;) I have this one that just died and another unit that was in a buddies computer and I'll admit I don't know what happened to that one but last I knew it was still running fine. The thing is that components change in these power supplies ,not just from year-to-year, but even mid year they might switch up what brand capacitor they use. Obviously everyone has a different experience but from what you've posted & from what I've personally experienced and from what I've experienced personally in PC repair these capacitors are as good as any could be expected to be. Another thing I should mention is this power supply was way over its limit. it's run crossfire ,as well as a very overclocked i5 2500K for 5+ years , and never had a problem.

My opinion is that after I put it in storage for a little short of a year that inactivity didn't help the situation at all ,because I installed this at the beginning of 2017 with a very minimal system and it lasted 8 months , and then this happened.

I suppose my point would be that we should all hope that our power supply capacitors make it to the 7-8 year mark. but ill also admit that id never buy one of these puppies again :) i dont mess around with the possibility of PSU death. I generally only buy a PSU that has a 7+ year warranty, since i am confident that the Maker deemed it to most likely make it to that point without service, or additional cost from them.

But if you know its going to fail and you are working it that hard and you have had it that long sounds to me like its time to just update it. You will have to replace it some time, might as well do it sooner rather than later.

Easier said than done sometimes for me. Since i have several children, replacing things like power supplies that haven't broken yet ,tend to sit on the back burner. As much as i would love to replace something, sometimes its just not feesible

technically you do what???

Also, g2/, p2/3, and t2/3 are gold, platinum, and titanium rated respectively...they are not all 80+ gold. ;)
Except there are no p3 or t3 units yet. Only G3.

I don't know it is going to fail, at least not any time soon. I'll replace it when it fails, why replace it sooner? Why spend the money now when I can spend the same amount later and likely get something better?

The only thing I know is if I did overload it, or something went wrong and the unit got too hot, it would fail gracefully and not kill the entire system.
