Hello everyone,
So I finally got an cheap AM4 APU, model A12-9800E (35 watts) + MSI A320 "grenade" mobo and a pair of kingston HyperX 2400Mhz DDR4. Nothing extraordinary here... but parts come and go, I couldn't wait for the ryzen based APUs...

But I just wanted to share with you my thinking on this system in particular.

Some background:
When zacate was released I got an 8 Watt C60 APU for browsing and running surveillance camera 24/7.
Some years later the AMD AM1 platform came out and I upgraded the thing to an 25 watt Athlon 5350 apu, also running 24/7.

The upgrade hopefully didn't made much of a difference in power consumption but I have to say, zacate is really low on power so it became my SQL server machine on my office, and the Athlon 5350 browsing and surveillance camera 24/7 at home.

Still, none of these systems are fast enough for browsing seriously or doing common daily tasks

So I decided to upgrade again, but this time thinking in power consumption and platform longetivity in mind. The thing will be on 24/7. So I decided to go with the "E" version of bristol ridge which jumps up to 35watts and I have to say, compared to the 5350, this thing flies. Unluckly I haven't found an Ryzen 3 nowhere in my place, which is a much better CPU all in all...

Here are some benchmarks and info:
note: I'm not an overclocker

So what are your opinion on this?

Its fine for what it is, when the Ryzen APUs see light of day in your neck of the wilderness I would sell that chip and upgrade.

Man your 3DMark06 scores runs circles around my old AthlonXP!

And MANNNN my AthlonXP still lights up and finished a benchmark run! I am freaking amazed. I thought it died a decade a ago.

Wrong score

This is the right one

I had a x1950 Pro 512 sapphire paired with it. I might see if I can find a 4670 and see how it runs lol

The AXP was the rig I was on before this current 1. I think with an SSD and if I could find 2GB DDR 3200 modules it should run smooth as butter under 7, now if I could find the correct NF2 GART that works in Vista/7.

Get AS Epoxy and AS5, do a 50/50 mix between the 2, it makes a good semi permanent bond (smaller force applied to remove hsfs)

Man DDR 3200???? or DDR 333/400?

Currently using eraser to get the RAM gold fingers clean again. This thing is as rusty as it can get. Good old years of AthlonXP.

OK back to topic. Would the OP's board support RavenRidge when it comes out? Hopefully Vega's bad efficiency doesn't continue into the integrated Vega iGPU. With a smaller count of SP, that iGPU should be going over 1GHz at least. Hell my 6800K iGPU can go over 1GHz easily.

Can you test any modern titles or even games from the past 4yrs on that CPU and report back? 720P is fine

Is bristol ridge the final evolution form of the entire bulldozer arc? Should not be too bad.

You'll have to wait for the Basilisk APU. Supposedly a successor to Zacate based on Ryzen and Polaris/Vega. It's still entirely unknown when it'lll appear though, I just know it was planned for release in 2016, but everything got delayed after delay of Ryzen itself.

Raven ridge is supported on that motherboard but it won't overclock.

Neat implementation OP,
Here we have a company with such finite pricing that CPUs are sold as little as $15 apart
not only that but whatever the price, no matter the market segment, be it the most basic of AM4 builds to the most extravagant TR4 build you get the full instruction set.
and more often than not non gimped CPUs that allow full threadcount with a few config adjustments (that has been the case in the past anyway YMMV)
Before I hear enthusiasts screaming underpowered, the OP is talking security systems and SQL servers so your K series CPU and $1000 graphics card may be faster but is nowhere near as "Powerful" if all you do is play GTAV
cheap AMD systems are the salt of the earth..

I love those AXP, I have several lying around. The most powerful being the AXP 3200+ 400Mhz bus which I never got a supported mobo for it. :kookoo:

I didn't know that, I'll wait. It seems to me that everytime I want an AMD system you have to wait.... and wait.... and wait....

Let me see if this thing runs some games and I'll report back....

Good thing about AM4 socket is you can always upgrade to Raven Ridge APU without the need of changing motherboard. Thanks for sharing, those 3DMark scores is pretty good for some old games, I seconded Melvis request.

So I'm not a gamer by any means, but a friend of mine just sent me a "alpha version" of the game "Divinity original sin 2". I installed fraps and played around for a while.
I played with very low settings. at 1280x720. It looks quite awesome to me, despite low framerates (but its not for serious gamers of course).

One thing is for certain, the system is dead silent. And it seems to me the CPU is not a bottleneck, the GPU is:
