This has been discussed before I know. But now seing the spec requirements for the new watch dog legion game. I really have to say, no 10 gb is not enough these days. Not for 4k at least now or in the for seen future.

I dont know by you guys, but I am holding on and se if we can not get a rtx 3080 20 GB or a rtx 3080 ti.

What you think about the 10 gb vram?

Its enough. I don't expect the 20GB version to really boost performance in games right now.

historically, both Nvidia and AMD (ATI prior) have been damn good about pairing the right amount of RAM with their GPU chips. I wouldn't touch a RTX 3080 20GB (assuming it would ever be offered) with a ten foot pole unless it was offered at the same price as the 10GB version. The extra rams on GPUs (think Nvidia GTX 960 4GB, AMD RX 470 8GB, AMD 580 8GB) rarely resulted in a major real world difference. You would be better off moving up to a faster GPU.

This. The only time the extra memory on these cards beyond what it originally was meant to have was in multi-gpu configurations.

As long it convinces you I guess..

It's just the 2080ti spec, thus the 11gb "req".

No.

Games are always developed for consoles first, then scaled up for pc and with next Gen 4K consoles have 16 gb of memory, the 10 gb of ram is enough up to 1440p gaming on 4K you'll likely to be limited years down the road, especially if you like to max out the textures.

The golden rule for a future proof GPU is imo to buy one with the same amount or higher RAM then the consoles, with 10 gbs maxing out the graphics in high resolution gaming will be limited by anything lower than 13gb video memory years down the road

We already see some Pc ports of current Gen games consume up to 8gb of memory when maxed out, and it'll increase with true next Gen console games

Devs do not have access to all that 16gb for their games. I think around 3-4gb is reserved for the OS and background processes.

Also these days, I'm not so sure games are exactly developed for consoles first 100% of the time anymore. And ports are kind of a thing of the past now that everything is basically x86 and Windows (PS being an exception to this)

Even with a small portion of memory Reserved for the OS, we'r still looking at more vram than an rtx 3080

I know 20 GB will not boost performance over 10 gb unless the memory is faster. Like if the 10 gb version will use the 19 Gbps and the 20 GB model used 21 Gbps chips. But I can also tell how it feels when you run out of vram. That is not a nice feeling. Lagging worse than a old man trying to run and games might even crash.

Better to have to much vram than to little. I will personally wait and see if we get a card between 3080 and 3090 that is more suitable for my needs cause I Like cranking eye candy to 11.

If you play on 4k, 16gb of vram should be a mininum for next gen

Nvidia knows this which is why they named the 24gb, work station centrec Ampere card RTX 3090 in a weird move to entise gamers to buy that If they want a future proof next gen gaming experience cause its the most expensive offering but thats just My guess

If sony could have shipped a 399$ console with 8 Gb of ram 7 years ago, then nvidia could have done way better here and now

Its not about if the RAM is faster or not. Its about if the GPU is fast enough to actually make use of the extra RAM. And a lot of games these days will actually occupy all the VRAM you can give it, but doesn't necessarily mean it has too, or more of the memory is actually benefiting that game.

Even with a small portion of memory Reserved for the OS, we'r still looking at more vram than an rtx 3080

Except the raw performance of 3080 GPU will slap anything thats in a console too, even with the slightly less available VRAM.

PS4 shipped with 8GB of GDDR5 ram plus 1GB of DDR3 for the OS. AMD RX 5500XT 4GB still easily outperforms the PS4. If you want to "future proof" then buy a video card in the future.

Considering the specs of Cyberpunk, I would say yes. Considering most people only keep gpus 2 or 3 years, I can't see 10gb not being enough for that time span. Any longer than that is like asking how long a keg will last.

Its not about performance, its about having the ability to max out textures and details which why people buy high end GPUs

Beeeeeeeeeelch.

Done. :D :toast:

10GB I think is fine for the life of that card, 3-5 years, I'd imagine. It may get long in the tooth on some titles towards the end, but, contrary to what pokemon thinks, I'd rather have a faster overall card with 10GB than one ~20% slower with 16GB in general. That said, it depends on the games you play (if you mod heavily, you may need to reconsider).

I think it would behoove some of those in this thread to look at vram use in some of TPU's game reviews at 4K. There may be a title out there that caps it, but, it's another thing if the gaming experience suffers from this or, as was said earlier, if the space is just allocated. There is a difference.

EDIT: At 4K, W1z's last 5 game performance reviews averaged 6.8 GB vRAM use. The highest was 8.9 GB (lowest was 4.8). I didn't go back further.. But just saying... it will likely be enough for a while...

I am on a 1920 x 1200 screen now 60 Hz that is around 8 years old now with only dvi connection fitting for my X58 system, but not fitting for a new zen 3/ampere powered system. Also I need a new screen with hdmi/display ports so I can just as well get a proper 4k screen now. Just as my other hardware, I have my screens for longer periods of time before replacing it.

Honestly, I'd rather get a 2560x1440 144Hz monitor than to go 4K 60 Hz....

I'm riding mine out (1440/144Hz) for a couple more years for sure. I'd rather do that than 4K/60...

If we want to believe the rumor mill and that BigNavi is only equal to 2080ti (impressive in itself) and that it comes with 16gb vram, I'd take the 3080 in a heartbeat. Not that this is a good comparison, but 1000hp doesn't do any good on a tricycle. I mean, it does, just not in the comparison.

Lets not also forget yes console has 16gb of mem and some of it is reserved but ITS also SHARED memory. That memory has to house all game and graphic data where on a pc usually separate pools. even if game needs more then 10gig's of vram with speed of storage now days its not as big of an issue as it used to be since system memory is fast now and so is data storage.

You can test this in a windows machine now. Fresh install win10 on say 8gb will use what ~3gb. Slap another 8 gb stick in there it could go up to 4-5gb. More ram doesn't mean its needed cause it just gets used to store extra data that might be needed.

you want to "future proof" then buy a video card in the future.
Not everyone buy new graphics card every two years, and If someone bought a 1070 4 years ago, that person would still be a very happy 1080p gamer to this day.

Nvidia xx70 series has had 8 Gb of memory for three generations now, GPU vendors must keep up with video memory demands especially with late current gen recomending upwards of 10 Gb for 4K gaming

Honestly, I'd rather get a 2560x1440 144Hz monitor than to go 4K 60 Hz....

I'm riding mine out (1440/144Hz) for a couple more years for sure. I'd rather do that than 4K/60...

But that 2560x1440 screen will put a glass ceiling on my 4K. Sorry I just had to say it:p, after telling me about the same thing about my X58 system.

yeah I cut go that route, but I'm used to 60 Hz screen and I'm more interested in high settings and eye candy than high fps. But I will consider your suggestion.

I was in the same boat, the newer titles with a decent degree of eye candy pushed it hard, luckily for me I got a 2060 Super as a Birthday present (special birthday) as a placeholder until I can get my hands on a 3070 or something tasty from AMD in the spring.

Its not about performance, its about having the ability to max out textures and details which why people buy high end GPUs
yes and when they no longer perform up to the people's desire, they purchase new ones. Hence why I said if you really want to worry about future proofing then purchase in the future. In the present, get whatever you want for your desired performance be it low, medium, ultra settings on 900p, 1080p, 1440p, 4k or anything in -between.
