But for $91, you'd rather add another $8 and buy a 50 GB SandForce-driven SSD. An SDHC class-10 gives you no more than 10 MB/s. RAID 0 won't go over 35~40 MB/s. SandForce SSDs are 285 MB/s.

I have been using it for a few months now with six Transcend 150X 16GB cards (which, alas, DX doesn't carry). Read speed exceeds 150MB/s and write speed is roughly half of that.

lol no. 150X doesn't mean 150 MB/s. It means 150 x 1.2 Mbps = 180 Mbps or 22.5 MB/s

22.5 MB/s is the maximum speed. Sustained speed is nowhere close to that. Even then a 16 GB 150X card costs around $35.

So $134 for 6 readers + $210 for the cards. That's $344 for 96 GB, ~120 MB/s storage. For $344, I'll get a 128 GB, 280 MB/s SSD.

one reader that takes 6 cards for $88. Still your going to pay for the cards. Some already have cards laying around for things like cameras though.

That's where the savings is at perhaps.

For a laptop for me at least. I would be happy with one 32Gb card, and the cheap one slot card.

So, how would this differ from CF to IDE adapter? Does it actually use write leveling, or it's just a card adapter in a fancy package that will burn out the card in no time at all.

That's not quite true, those class ratings are minimum speeds. My 4GB Samsung SDHC is class 6 and it's 17MB/s read and 12-13MB/s write. Well I got with my dealextreme supercheap usb reader 15/10MB/s.

What is the point of having a super slow DIY SSD ?
Remember Raid-0 performance (per drive) will be limited to the slowest card so this is completly pointless with card that "lie around" because they are most likely slow and as bt said its also pointless to buy fast cards for this.

^^ I need something like that, only regular 80-pin IDE for my pizzabox style P4 machine which I hope to turn in to a router someday. Some dickhead took the HDD mounting cage out so there's no way to securely install a HDD, but CF might work.
