im looking for some free software to convert a .vob file i have to .mpg

also, is there free software out there that would let me compress the video as well as convert it?

Motherboard Asus Striker Extreme 680i (NB:C55XE, SB:MCP55XE)
Cooling Zalman 9700, 1*200mm fan, 5*120mm fans
Memory 8GB OCZ PC6400 - 4*2 @ 622MHz (stability problems)
Video Card(s) Geforce 8800GTS
Storage 2* Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB - no RAID
Display(s) Mitsubishi Diamond Plus 74SB
Case Antec Nine Hundred + optional fans
Audio Device(s) On board (sort of - SupremeFX ADI 1988B)

Software Gentoo GNU+Linux amd64 (latest development kernel)
Vob is practically mpg, the only difference is subtitle tag data. Rename it to mpg and it'll work as an mpg (and should be detected as such by your file manager).

i tried that before and it didnt work. i just copy/pasted the .vob to my HDD and renamed it to .mpg. windows media player wont play it of course. i use vlc which works but i need it to work in wmp

~ $ cd Vi* && mkdir DVD && cd *D
~/Videos/DVD $ vobcopy -D /dev/sr0
~/Videos/DVD $ cp *1* "Track 01.mpg"
~/Videos/DVD $ file "Track 01.mpg"
Track 01.mpg: MPEG sequence, v2, system multiplex

You know what to do :p
