Recently joined WCG, built a brand new box with a X2 BE2400 + Gigabyte 740G board, undervolted it to 1.1v working @stock speed. Max load it consumes 80W. The cpu can work @ 1.7Ghz with mere .7V and full load consumes 55w.

I wanted to go even more green, can I build my own little Solar energy converter to be used for this PC? May be even power few bulbs in my home.

As usual TPU is the best source of bright brains:rockout::respect:, so please pour some ideas.

And oh I don't live in a 10 bedroom mansion or on a 1 acre plot:p. This thing needs to be small to put in my patio.

:toast:

Usually solar power panels are connected to the mains so when they are producing electricity, your household consumes it and any excess goes in to the grid. At night, for instance, all your electricity would still come from the grid.

All I know is solar power systems run >10,000 USD.

This site should help you out:
http://www.solarhome.org/

A 125w solar panel alone costs >600 USD.

Panel + battery, along with a DC-DC power supply. An inverter can be used, though that adds cost and you'll lose energy in the conversion.

Will have to do the math to find out exactly large of a panel you'd need (power computer + charge battery during the day), along with a large enough battery for running at night + the occasional cloudy day.

While 5 - 30w panels are fairly cheap, they can get pricey beyond that. Easily hundreds of dollars for > 100w.

If you have to money you can go solar and wind but really what is the point ? by the time you pay for all that equipment you could just pay the electric bill for what 6-7 years ? thing is you can take the going green just so far , If I could bottle up my farts and burps I could save tons of methane from getting into the atmosphere but it would not amount to a hill of beans in the long run .

Looks like one of those scam, give-me-your-money-before-you-buy-what's-actually-important sites/tv ads.

yup I know, that is why I am asking here, can I go to say Home depot to build my own say for under $400? I can afford that for a good cause that benefits me too. Something small which can powerup and give 80w of energy.

It would be easier and far cheaper to build a wind generator . Home Depot don't sell solar panels . You would need to line your roof top with them in order to to get any real wattage . that would cost some were in the 30,000 dollar area and well for that you could have payed for the electric bill for 10 years !

Software A lot.
Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
By the time it was manufactured, shipped, displayed, sold, bought, driven to the store to get, electricity to run the drill to build the stand, and hundreds of other things, the net gain is a net loss.

Buy wind energy, and realize it also suffers from the same fate, and that the net gains from the "green" energy sources are a long ways off from being as efficient as the coal burning system in place. It only takes a few hundred gallons of fuel to move millions of pounds of coal to a large facility that burns it much cleaner than the car you took to drive to Home Depot.

Not really... you're dipping into the perpetual motion theories there.

You'll definitely need a charger inverter, and those run about 800 ish for a decent one. Solar panels are a lot better than they use to be, better density. Your going to want at least a 4kw solar array if connecting to the house. You could build a system substantially cheaper than 10 gs. For an example if your computer is in your bedroom you could take your room off the grid and connect it to the solar system. This way only your room is being run off the batteries and they charge during the day and you won't have a continuous draw of power as you would wiring it into the main of the house. How ever some states actually pay you if you feed power back into the grid, your meter just runs backwards. Their is also a digital kilowatt meter that reads the power that is being back fed into the grid and that is subtracted from your bill. But as was already pointed out these systems start at 10K and go up from their. Way UP.

Yes they may sell them but I do not think they keep them in storage at the store so shipping would put more green house gasses into the atmosphere and then having them delivered and so on the thing is you would get better results from bottling up your farts than trying to go green ..

They keep them at the warehouse. Trucks come and go from their all the time, not like an 18 wheeler is going to make a special delivery for a solar panel.

yup I know, that is why I am asking here, can I go to say Home depot to build my own say for under $400? I can afford that for a good cause that benefits me too. Something small which can powerup and give 80w of energy.
As already said, $400 isn't enough. It would be far more trouble than its worth. Buy a 80+ Gold PSU (90% power efficiency) with that money and call it good. ;)

Well actually, if it's frozen, but that's getting into details

Well how about jumping off your roof and flapping your arms ? Can you fly ? :shadedshu

See not every thing is possible !

But what is with all the " Lets go GREEN " ? I see no point in it . After all the truly best way to go " Green " would to replace all existing power plants with nuclear power !
