[SOLVED]Flickering crap on my new xfx 280x

I just got this card to replace my aging 6970 (that never had 1 issue ever) and I keep seeing random flickers on my browser.
It does it only a few times a day but still. its not what I'd expect with a new card.
I'm tempted to return it and put the 6970 back in.

Why does it do this?

install msi afterburner and configure manual 2d/3d clock profiles use the disable ULPS/force consent voltage option's if needed

I tried the F16 bios but it crashed when starting a game so I flashed it back.

I tried to register it and it said:

Well I got the card back and they replaced to heatsink and fans.
I haven't seen any fickering.
They said 1 fan was toast so maybe it was causing a short circut or something and was making it flicker...

This problem can be solved without flashing the BIOS and other similar manipulations.
You need to disable hardware acceleration in the browser settings and preferences Adobe Flash plugin. The individual plug-ins work in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, so you need to disable hardware acceleration in the settings of each of the plug-ins.
The same problem was on my msi r9 280x, and it helped to solve it.

Same stuff happened to me on a 7950, disabling hw acceleration on chrome fixed it, but expect lower quality on certain reproductions (at least for me, stuff like Twitch looks way better with it on).

Mine wasn't XFX, so... it may be certain AMD drivers + GPU combos. Also, having to DISABLE HW acceleration from a BROWSER is like "Minesweeper crashing your drivers" :/

I tried that too, I noticed it got worse with it disabled..

OK I loaded the bios from XFXSupport.
I can see the mem is now idle at 800 vs 150 and the core voltage idles at 0.943v vs 0.848v

I was sent 2 bios files, I chose the newest, V015.047.000.xxxx the other was 015.043.000.xxxx

So far I notice things are more snappier in windows explorer and desktop, icons load faster and scrolling is much more stable and smoother....will report back after some more testing.

OK well we have a problem.
I played some games and everything was fine all night, then I fired up a game and boom, monitor shut off and no signal, computer running but unresponsive.
Had to do a hard reset.

Tried once more and same thing, the game was loading and then no monitor, locked up.
Going to flash the original bios back and try again.

Not really liking that much as its hard on my harddrive and data when that happens.

I installed the old bios and the game worked fine.
I had this issue before with the bios located on xfxsupport here: http://xfxstorage.com/Support/BIOS/Video/ATI/R9280X/280x Core Edition (TDF).rar

It would work fine till I try and load a game then doom.

I noticed on all the bios version that WORK, there is this line in the bios 113-280X_GD5_3G_130805KLA1-W8 TAHITI PCI_EXPRESS GDDR5

And the ones that crash loading a game have this line: 113-TAHITI_XTL_3GBGD5_130913KLA_OV_W81 TAHITI PCI_EXPRESS GDDR5

The card came with version 015.040.000.001.000000 2013-10-17 04:22:00 and versions that work are 015.041.000.000.000000 2013-11-29 04:15:00 and 015.041.000.000.000000 2014-01-16 02:42:00 and they all have the KLA1 identifier.

with the same 800mhz memory idle state and core vid at idle of 0.943, I think that would do it for me.

Only a bios guru/expert would know what the KLA1 vs KLA vs KLB1 vs KL would mean.
All I know is the KLA1 versions work on my card, and the others not so good.

Well the card works, other than the flickering.
I rma'd it already and they said it was fine.
There are obviously different version of the bios for different revisions of the board, I could guess till the cows come home what the differences are, I cant read fYÃ2ÀÃèíÉu,è×è€u‹Ñ‹Ëè°)#Âtè²)3Òëè½èJt3Òè˜)‹ÈèÏÑè©#ÊfÁæ3öèùtè0…ÁtôQèNYuíè"3ÈëæfÁîèuZèfÁ and the only text that I can read I noted above.

What the card needs is a bios that has a idle frequency of 800 on the memory to get rid of the flickering and my revision of the card seems to not have one available.

I'm really not wanting to tear this back out and wait weeks for rma and pay for shipping again.
I've been using ati cards since RAGE 128 days and I never seen such a buggy series as this.
My 6970 was a beast and still is, I never had a issue with it.
The 6970 idles at 250 core and 150 mem and it doesn't flicker, but it also has hynix memory chips, maybe thats the problem.

Have you tried hooking up a second monitor (if you have one) or trying to up 2D clocks. Two monitors will bring your memory clock out of idle and I know some other cards of mine have been able to set a 2D clock.

I've loaded the second bios from xfxsupport this one is 015.043.000.000.000000
So far I played some games and no crashing, the mem is 800 at idle like the other bios.

Nope, no good.
The bios works after I flash it and reboot, but if I reboot again it will crash when going into 3D mode loading a game.

Looks like I'm stuck.
