[SOLVED] Issues with Radeon HD 6950 Sapphire installation. [PSU incompatibility]

Hi everyone.

I've exhausted all my resources trying to fix the problem, checking back through posts & posts but i cannot seem to find out whats causing this issue.

I recently got a new comp and am attempting to install my old Graphics Card. I've installed the hardware but my comp doesn't recognize the Display Adapter in device manager. I've attempted to download the drivers for it using AMD Catalyst Omega 14.12 but continue getting an Error stating "Application Install : Install Package Failure". I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.

I've tried removing all old graphics drivers with Driver Fusion before attempting to use AMD Catalyst Omega but i continue to get the error. Any ideas of what i should be doing?

Hi , i was using a hd6950 before my actual gpu and never had issue with that, you should use something like atiman unistaller .
You can find it in the download section here on TPU .
On another pc you have encouter the same problem? What motherboard are you using? Pc specs?

This is the only PC I've tried it on. I'm using an ASUS H81M-K motherboard, It's an Intel Core 15-4460(3.1ghz) - 8GB Ram and using windows 7

Sounds like you're able to get the display to work through the 6950 using the generic drivers baked in to Windows, just the Catalyst drivers/software fails to install? Might try updating them manually through Device Manager (browse to the .inf file extracted from the setup). Could also try seeing what Windows Update has to offer, if only to get something installed there.

The installer should create a log file somewhere that'll tell you what went wrong in more detail. I don't recall where that sits off the top of my head.

If the card is not being seen in the device manager its hardware related. Confirm the card works and the slot with another card. Also could be your PSU

This is not a driver issue

At this stage I don't have my monitor cable plugged into the 6950, it wasn't displaying anything.

Correct the Catalyst software fails to install giving me the error "Application Install : Install Package Failure"

I can't see the 6950 in the Device Manager

I have updated Windows as far as it will go. Only one update keeps failing and won't install.

Unfortunately i don't have another card to test the slot/card with. Would posting my PSU details help?

What PSU are you using? Wattage? 6950 calls for a minimum of 500 watt psu. And What Jester said ^

There is the issue. That PSU will not power the 6950

You need at least 550w with 30A on the 12 volt <educated guess

Under full load it can pull 300w by its self

The PSU out of the old PC should do the trick as well. Either way.

Shouldn't the 6950's bios have halted startup when it saw either unplugged or insufficient power?

The BIOS is the first thing to power up. Before anything else. It could be something else still its not a slam dunk. I would definitely test the card before I buy a PSU
