Hi, I'm having an issue with the PC I'm building. Everytime I turn my PC on it will turn on for a split second (fans will start spinning) and it will immediatly shut off.

I have already tried:
-Re-seating CPU
-Unplugging and plugging back in all my cables
-Trying 1 stick off RAM
-Having only my Motherboard, RAM, CPU and PSU connected

System Specs
MB Gigabyte H310M S2H
CPU Intel I5 7400
GPU Asus RX550
PSU Corsair CV450
RAM 16 GB Corsair Vengence LPX

Does it stay powered on (albeit not working) when you power it up without the 4-pin or 8-pin CPU connector?

If it does, then it looks like a faulty MOSFET or the like.

I know nothing about this motherboard, but its specs say it supports 8th and 9th Gen Intel processors. Your CPU is 7th Gen.

I've looked and from what i have read it supports I5's

It does power up without the CPU pin connected, could it just be a faulty CPU or will it definatly be a faulty MOSFET

You need to pull everything out of the case and assemble it on a wooden bread/cutting board and see if it boots there. While out, inspect the case to ensure you only have a case standoff where there is a corresponding motherboard mounting hole. Cases are designed to support 1000s of different motherboards. A common mistake is to insert one or more extra stand-offs under the case.

If you have the same problem while outside the case, and you are 200% certain everything is mounted properly, try a different PSU to see what happens.

Sounds like a short in the CPU power delivery section. (Do you mean the 4-pin plug)

Your motherboard will drive an i5 yes..

But not your i5.. they are not compatible..

Your board is good for 8th and 9th gen CPU, not your 7th gen.

I've been wondering if the 8th gen and 9th gen were the same thing, minus the code names, default frequencies and cores, LOL. Even when Intel would seem infamous to some for requiring a later motherboard, possibly even if electrically compatible, from what I gathered so far, as I didn't search all those generations nor even going through most of Intel's Ark.

I just naturally assumed that electrically they are not compatible at the least, let alone software.

Well, I do have to admit that I posted the above, because it looked like Intel kept things the same 'ol for years. Even when it wouldn't surprise me if they started changing things with the 8th gen and possibly more than some though with the 7th gen. (Kaby Lake, IIRC) Did they really keep the same lithography for years now??? Was it really much like Rocket Lake vs. Comet Lake?

Good catch!

@DeadInside - what prompted you to buy that CPU? I note it is not listed on the motherboard's QVL - qualified vendors list. To ensure compatibility, you should always and only buy listed CPUs. Most motherboard makers provide a CPU QVL on each board's website.

You should always consult the motherboard's RAM QVL. There are too many RAM makers and models for motherboard makers to test them all so unlike CPUs, you don't have to buy listed RAM. But to ensure compatibility, you should buy RAM with the same specs as listed RAM.

Yeah, 100 & 200 series support 6th and 7th gen, 300 & 400 series support 8th and 9th gen. Same socket, same architecture but still incompatible.

It could work after some modification tho.

It's not a power issue, the CPU and motherboard are simply incompatible.

It was the CPU out of my old PC, I actually asked a friend for motherboard reccomendatioms and he suggested that one as it had the right socket (LGA 1151)

The socket is technically right but it's still not compatible :/ you need a 100 (with a new enough BIOS to support it) or 200 series board with that 7th gen CPU.

Yeah - while certainly the motherboard socket must be compatible, so must the chipset. That's why should always consult the CPU QVL yourself and not depend on someone else.
Just to check, would a I5-9400F Work?
Well, do you see it on the QVL? I linked to it above. And yes, it is listed but as noted, it requires BIOS version F12.

There isn't a "QVL" on CPUs, it's simply a support list.

Since I've returned the H310M as i was under the assumption the MOSFET was faulty, If i was to get a I5-9400F what motherboard would you recomend that is compatible (Preferebly under £100 if possible)
