The Leipzig Games Convention has become a playground for one more announcement that's worth knowing. This time Sony is officially updating its game console line-up with the introduction of PlayStation Portable 3000. As the name suggests this is the third update for PSP and it comes to bring a built-in mic for VoIP calls and a new LCD that improves both the color range as well as the contrast over the original version of the 4.3-inch display. The home button of the PSP 3000 has also been redesigned. It is now called "PS Button" and has the PlayStation logo on it, instead of just the "Home" sign used in previous two versions, otherwise it has the same function. Other than that the console looks just like the older PSP 2000. First PSP 3000s should start shipping on October 15th for 199 Euros ($294) and be sold as bundles that will either include a game like FIFA 09 or the Go! communications pack.

the other ones are going cheaper for like 199. This doesnt really add much for the price hike.

dont really see why they need a new psp

DS is beating PSP in sales so possibly they think this might bump sales

Hmmmm. Not worth almost $300USD, maybe $200...maybe. They should start marketing their UMD platform a bit more to grab a few unknowing customers.

I agree. the PSP compatibility with the PS3 is awesome and all that, but UMD is so underutilized.

dont care what everyone says but it is a handheld console so there for it must have good games

sony is just trying to break into the market so maybe it will take another handheld

still you can pick up a ds lite and a flash card and it will just be as good not graphics wise but at least it has fun games

I owned a PSP once but I sold it in under a month because of the lack of good games and the load times were terrible, I would play it in the car and by the time we got there I got like 2 mins of game time in.

ive been kicking around the idea of getting a psp. for those that own one, i know it connects to the internet, but can it stream music from a network server like the PS3 can? essentially i want to use the psp as a remote media player.

I owned a PSP, but sold it. I owned a DS Lite and sold it also. I don't know, I found that any time that I would be away from my PC or Console, I would be doing something else, so I wouldn't be playing games.

Handheld gaming used to be great when I wasn't the one driving, but ever since I started driving, I don't have a need for portable gaming.

Color gamet and Contrast ratio? No! Improve the screen's pixel response time. The reason no one buys UMD's (or fast moving games for that matter) is because 25ms is ridiculous!

If you set up an Apache server on your home computer, yes. I had a media server streaming files to both my PSP and my Wii until I sold them both. (You'll need to convert all your movies to .flv format, the music can work as .mp3.

Making a Streaming Server to any device is very simple whit programs like TVersity!
You don't need to convert anything just install it make some options and streaming goes to PSP, Xbox, Xbox360, Smartphone’s, normal phones, iPhone, Wii, PS3, PC, any device!
TVersity converts everything on the fly! Music, Videos, Pictures...

In a news thread you are to discuss about the subject, and NOT slander about it's predecessor. I, no we don't need to hear your past experiences with the PSP when it was LAUNCHED. Now the PSP has a large array of games and so thus its different.

The DS Lite is aimed at a lower end segment vs the PSP. I don't see people with DSs listening to music and watching movies...

I honestly think sony should bring back the metallic chassis that the PSP had cause these newer ones break too easily.

whats battery life like on these things?

I had a PSP 1000 (that eventually bricked after I dropped it a couple dozen times... at least it was durable) The battery on that thing lasted me about 4 hours of gaming. I've heard that the newer batteries are designed to last longer, so maybe these ones are good for about 4 and a half hours.

Side story: Before mine bricked I actually dropped it on concrete while out for a run (I used it while running for the MP3 function) after it hit the concrete and bounced I accidentally kicked it and it skipped along the sidewalk and when I picked it up (with the exception of a couple scratches) the PSP was undamaged.

MMm was thinking of getting one next month, might as well wait for the 3k series to come out over here.

As for the battery life, I've played on FAT the older one and SLIM the newer version up to present, well it all depends on what game you play, brightness, volume.. What game (meaning lots of loading reading from the UMD). But for the past months been tied up with Monster Hunter Freedom 2. It lasts me about 4-4h30m with minimal brightness and volume. (That's with the older PSP fat).

You can just use either the ps3 to stream to the psp, or load Tversity on your computer, and it will stream any format by transcoding it on the fly.

EDIT: jumped the gun, didn't see that moto666 beat me to it. lol.

Calm yourself TK. it's not slander, it's people posting about their personal experiences. And the fact does remain that there are far fewer games on the psp compared to the DS. And I can play music and watch movies on my daughter's DS just fine, btw. It does take an add on cartridge tho. Costs between $30-40 US, and takes MicroSD cards.

Yep thats pretty much what I use mine for. I only have one game for it. I have a few UMD's but mostly I use it for an MP3/Media player.

I have a Location Free TV box that I could be utilizing too and basically watch TV on the go with it. I need to pick up a cheap switch(Im running out of LAN ports) so I can have it and the PS3 at the TV.

not mentioned in the OP, a few other changes between the PSP 3000 and its older counterparts is that it has a redesigned circuitry (making it cheaper to produce) and it has more improved hacking countermeasuers to prevent owners from customisation and piracy.

bit of a shame really, i wanted to see the next gen psp come out with wireless n, maybe actual internal storage, plus more processing and ram grunt, i care more about weather or not it can seamlessly decode divx moreso then how improved the contrast ratio is ect ect.

oh sweet :rockout: so i have my home theater upstairs so i cant listen to music when i am downstairs. what i am going to get is a nice 2.1 set of satallite speakers where the sub has a multimedia jack. i will then connect the psp to the 2.1 setup and get onto my home network. all my mp3s are on a NAS that streams movies and music currently to the ps3. so you guys are saying that the psp can access the NAS just like the PS3 can? so then I can listen to my music which is upstairs on the NAS downstairs where the 2.1 setup is? amazing. i am doing this!

Are there going to be unhackable (Pandora battery/custom firmware/custom code execution)?
