Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) boss Shawn Layden yesterday alluded to the possibility that first-party PlayStation titles may soon launch on PC. While there’s nothing clear to go on just yet, the move would make perfect sense for the company as it prepares for the next console war with Microsoft.

The news comes from Business Insider’s Christopher Palmeri who reported that Layden, in an interview, said:

We must support the PlayStation platform — that is nonnegotiable. That said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.

Maybe they learned from Rockstar. Or maybe they don't want to be left behind as Microsoft already stated that all of their games will be compatible with Windows 10 going forward. I was actually a little shocked to see Gears 5 available on Steam.

Makes sense. Publishers want to increase revenue and there's a heck of a lot of money to be made from PC gamers. It's hard to ignore that PC gaming brings in almost the same revenue as MS and Sony's consoles combined. MS has figured it out and it looks like Sony has now as well. Now we just need Nintendo to realize it and then the PC will be the universal platform.

I think Sony finally understands that the console and PC can live side by side.

This is really positive, because it will definitely make the PC platform an even better place to be. Wonder how far they'll take it. Timed exclusivity would be just fine with me.

I don't know very much at all about consoles but I think the Xbox One X uses Windows 10 and the hardware is basically midrange PC hardware.

As far as PS4 it uses midrange PC hardware too but I don't know what OS it uses.

Consoles (xbox/ps) now run hardware based on AMD's PC hardware so they are essentially similar unlike historically in the past where both console hardware and software were completely different.

Emulation. But both xbox and playstation are using AMD x86 cpu's now; so I guess it won't be that hard..

That defeats the point in what AMD has done with running same hardware. The crux of their Mantle process, evolving into DX12 is to make the software environment between PC and console same/similar. This obviously simplifies ports reducing what took years to a month.

Probably via their Playstation streaming thing.

If not, probably will be late releases which is better than nothing. Games are pricey to develop and getting another 700,000 - 1,000,000 sales on PC can help. Probably will be exclusive for a year before bringing them to PC to help Playstation sell. The main reason the PS4 is outselling the One is due to superior exclusives so I doubt Sony will shoot themselves in the foot there.

MS has figured it out and it looks like Sony has now as well. Now we just need Nintendo to realize it and then the PC will be the universal platform.
Microsoft only cares for the following reasons:

1) They want to push their cloud and streaming services. See Crackdown 3 and Titanfall using Azure for destruction and AI respectively.

2) MS Store, subscriptions and other things. Services are their future, not hardware.

3) The One was a flop, the PS4 handily outsold it. Poor marketing, higher initial price, slower specs and mainly poor exclusives sank it. MS can't turn around the One which is why they decided to monetize with the above. Which they were going to do regardless, just occurred quicker because Sony beat them down so hard this generation.
