z5500s are great for music and movies, you need a audio card for best setup. These z5500s have, optical input for ps3,xbox,rca for anything else and 6 channel direct if you want. Dts uplifter, 5.1 surround and dolby pro logicIIx. Just think for $1000 you could get the same setup with a couple of monitor speakers and a reciever. DUHHH!!!!!

only read the opening post, but just a suggestion... why don't you use your stereo/amp if you have one already, if not buy one :) .... im using a nice pioneer and still haven't heard as good of sound from ANY pc setup, thats without me using a sound card... but yeh im pretty sure one would help even more.

I have a center speaker that weighs more than the Z-5500s subwoofers and receiver combined!

$1000 would get you:

Wooden speakers
Bookshelf speakers that can handle 35 Hz - 40 KHz
Multiple bass ports on each bookshelf speaker
Multiple tweeters on each bookshelf speaker
Upgrade speakers independently without receiver change
DTS True-HD and DTS Masters decoding on receiver

1-4 Fibre inputs/output
1-4 Coaxial input/output
1-4 HDMI input/output
RCA inputs
Ability to bi-wire for better quality
Ability to change wires to higher quality wire
Manage the TV, VCR, DVD Player, through one remote
Ability to up convert 720i/p to 1080i/p
FM/AM radio
Maybe an alarm clock
About 20-40 built in DSP
Equalizer to manage treble, bass, distance of each speaker
Dynamic range Compression
Cross-over management
Preset configurations, e.g Dolby for the TV, then when switching to the computer have a different peset for the equalizer configuration.

Edit:
Although I agree, in this situation the Z-5500 is the better option for the thread starter, the HI-FI set up is a better deal as you get more for your money.

İ think the best choice creative s 750 7+1. İ hear the sound quality of s 750's is very good. You want a speaker for music and game so you could buy a s750. İf you say ' movie is the most important' when i suuggest logitech z 5500.

I agree here with Erocker.
The sound card is personally more important than the speakers.

Just like a PSU, get something crappy to back something awesome up and you get crap.

I dont want to discourage you from getting what you want but my father in law has a set of sony (best he could buy) 1100w 5.1 home theater speakers he bought for his 60inch sony tv. He kicks hisself in the ass everytime he watches a movie at my house. He still keeps asking how im playing a non DTS movie in DTS. So many adjustments with a computer set of speakers that you just dont have with home audio. The razer barracuda sound card I have lets me choose the db on each speaker and the hz on the sub to fine tune everything in. 10 band equaliser and wave control.

Hey guys with replies on WP being consistent to TPU
I have decided to get either the Sony Set or Yamaha as below with a new sound card maybe if necessary

http://www.yamahamusic.com.au/products/avit/htsystems/YHT-195.asp

or

http://www.digitalhome.com.au/Tvs_And_Home_Theatre/Sony/HTDDW785_Theatre_System/18125

Thanks for all the opinion's im going to be buying myself a new christmas present

I own the Sony the "HTDDW785" and it is not a great package, the satellites that come with it are extremely light, small, and flimsy. They are plastic and not bookshelf in type/quality. I have since kept the receiver and subwoofer and replaced the satellites with the "Sony SS-B1000" speakers until I have the money for something better.
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000OG88KY/?tag=tec06d-20

The "YHT-195" is not a great package, like with the Sony those are extremely lightweight speakers, probably plastic too. That Yamaha receiver is better than the Sony one however it's still lacking a few features. I would look for a standalone receiver that is capable of playing back the new standards such as DTS Masters and DD True HD such as the "Sony STR-DG820" http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs...10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665364791

The speakers buy separately, e.g. Tangent range!

http://www.amazon.co_uk/dp/B000SSJQU4/?tag=tec053-21 (and yes these speakers weigh 26. lbs)

and

http://www.amazon.co_uk/dp/B00171NLR0/?tag=tec053-21

An average AV receiver would have more adjustments/configurations than the Z-5500. I get equalizers and decibel configurations on my AV receiver and on my soundcards driver panel big deal. My sound card supports DTS Interactive too :)

Edit 2:

beesagtig,

The model number is "STR-DG820" and if you are in the US it can be bought here:

My receiver is old and I would not call it average, it is temporary until I can afford the STR-DG820, so it is probably not the best example for comparison.

My receiver does support DTS, Dolby Digital, Prologic movie/music etc. :)

My soundcard, Auzentech X-meridian supports Dolby Digital live and DTS interactive to encode the bit streams for my receiver to decode :)

Exactally, your reciever supports what its given, nothing more nothing less. If your movie is in analog guess what? Your reciever puts it in analog.(PERIOD) Those adjustments you were talking about where are they? invisable. So now you have a $400 reciever that your $150 sound card encodes for you? Im getting more confused by the minit. You have a set of z5500s you been comparing?

Whether the movie is in analogue or digital I can apply Prologic Movie, Prologic music, PLIIx, stereo, and muti-channel stereo. Other DSPs such as Jazz, Concert and Hall mode can also be applied.

If I'm watching a DVD from a standalone player or if I've got a Xbox 360 hooked up, my receiver is capable of decoding the Dolby Digital bitstreams or DTS bitstreams. (no pc involvement)

I only use Dolby interactive and Dolby Digital live on the sound card because I have it hooked up to my PC via SPDIF (Fibre) and it's the easiest way of up mixing the sounds in games or MP3s, I could of easily of used my receivers Prologic feature, but heh.

Edit:

Hey

So for the Tangent Avantgarde 200, how many speakers come with that, 2 or 4?

and then with the Tangent 10253 Millenium 100 Speakers, that's 2 sub woofers right?

Does this sound right?

Olly

With all bookshelf speakers, they come in pairs :)

The Tangent Avantgarde 200 Speakers are floor standing speakers, similar to the smaller bookshelf speakers but they are designed to sit on the floor rather than on a desk or on a shelf, they tend to drive more bass than bookshelves, the floor standing speakers are traditionally placed at the front while the bookshelves are usually for surround. The bookshelves are the Tangent 10253 Millenium 100.

I did not post any links to a sub woofer. You will need one.

Whether the movie is in analogue or digital I can apply Prologic Movie, Prologic music, PLIIx, stereo, and muti-channel stereo. Other DSPs such as Jazz, concert and Hall mode can also be applied.

If I'm watching a DVD from a standalone player or if I've got a Xbox 360 hooked up, my receiver is capable of decoding the Dolby Digital bitstreams .

Your still missing the point, the reciever only plays what it recieves, no uplift. I agree with a reciever and bookshelf speakers you can get better sound at a cost. and for the cost of the reciever alone you can have the z5500s and a sound card thats suitable. The best audio now is DTS, dolby prologic is in the back seat.

What do you mean by uplifts? if you mean enhancements I've already mentioned the many DSPs and methods to up mixing it from 2.0 to 5.1.

The best audio now is DTS, dolby prologic is in the back seat.

They are two different technologies for two different purposes, one is for discrete 5 channels the other is for making the illusion of multiple channels from less channels. If you were to compare DTS and Dolby 5.1 I would agree with you, DTS is better in my personal opinion. (Prologic is to compete with DTS:Neo)

BTW. In the thread starters post I recommended the Z-5500 to him because he said that he doesn't watch movies but plays games. beesagtig another poster has shown interest in the AV route which is why I have persisted he continues in that direction and buys the Sony STR-DG820.

Ok then Z-5500's it should be unless they aren't too good at playing music. I don't want the bass to kill every song either if you know what i mean

Don't worry, you can adjust the subwoofer's volume independently from the rest.
