AnandTech, who spoke with the USB Promoter Group at Computex, have shared that the new protocol is expected to manifest in physical, consumer products by the end of 2020. The specification for the next-generation bus is currently on version 0.7, with the USB Promoter Group expecting it to be finalized by this Summer. Then it's just a matter of manufacturers developing new products powered by the latest protocol.

USB 4.0 borrows heavily from Intel's thunderbolt 3 technology - which, if you'll remember, was made available as an open specification very recently. Intel's contribution of the Thunderbolt 3 protocol will enable USB 4.0 to achieve speeds of up to 40 Gbps with multiple data and display protocols being able to share available bandwidth. Additionally, USB 4.0 will make use of USB Type-C's interface, ensuring backwards compatibility not only with it, but also USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 3. Due to the many improvements in data transfer speeds and ability to stream multiple data and display protocols, the USB Promoter Group is looking at the possibility of changing USB's trademark logo for the next generation interface, alongside a revised branding scheme.

USB 3.0 (the older one) is only now being commodified, with cheapo chinese periphericals everywhere.
3.1 Gen2 (or shall we call it - USB 10gbps) devices are still somewhat rare, and those that do exist are considerably more expensive than their USB 5gbps counterparts.

I didn't even saw yet anything USB 20gbps on Amazon... not even sure what uses that. External SSDs maybe ?

So if 4.0 ( USB 40gbps) launches in 2020, it will be at least 2022 until it becomes commonplace.... so, move along, nothing to see here.

My keyboard, and mouse together sustain 16.3 MB/s so more bandwidth is always welcome.

I'm curious how you measured that. It honestly seems implausibly high.

Either way, USB2.0 still got you covered.

With a flash drive plugged into keyboard of course. How else would you know what a keyboards bandwidth is?

I haven't fully implemented USB3 with all versions. Type-C is somewhere over the rainbow, let alone specs for USB 4.0.

Where are all of the USB type C peripherals that we can plug into the MB header. Or are we going to get another upgrade like when USB 3.0 was released and MBs had the slot but the cases were still USB 2.0. Oh wait you could use a pass through from the back of the case? This seems just like PCI_E 4.0, but at least we have already seen PCI _E 4.0 drives not that you can buy any right now. I also wonder when this will be implemented on MBs.

The only USB-C port I have is my Note 9.

I know I was shocked when I got the X370 board and saw that they replaced one of the USB 3.0 ports with one. I then did a search and there was absolutely nothing to buy

Not to sound too harsh, but it would seem as though some of us have been slow to adopt/change....

For a while now, I have had 2x USB-C external drive enclosures, 2x USB-C Flash Drives, a USB-C sound module, plus my Note 9.... 4 of the 6 which stay plugged in almost all of the time, since I have enough ports to do so, by way of my internal/external hubs :)

Perhaps I jumped the gun a bit, but I generally like to stay current on things like this, which I am sure will hold me over until/whenever USB 5 comes along.... hopefully the mobo & case mfgr's will catch up in the meantime

I love how these 'standards' seem to follow up on one another at an ever-increasing rate and complexity.

Here's a tip: make something that actually lasts longer than 2 years so we can adopt it properly, like USB 2.0 did. Kinda suits the universal bit ;)

Backwards and forwards compatibility and Plug and Play are the only nice things about USB. With like a dozen different sockets, it isn't exactly universal.
