SSD active time stuck at 100% in Task Manager, slows the entire pc down

This kind of thing happens when I plug my external SSD enclosure into my USBC port on my gaming pc. The drive is pegged at 100% for a long time right after plugging it in. I suspected it's something to do with power delivery as my USB3 ports don't have that issue.

It could also be the drive is failing...

computer is a decade old with a trash tier ssd
not sure why anybody is wondering about the problem here

This has been happening to me regularly over the past year or so. It is truely bizarre, and I never got to the bottom of it.

What does fix it for me is to clone the disk exactly as is to another, and all is well. But, it's not the disk failing. There isn't anything suggested here that I haven't tried. The other strange thing is that once the problem is fixed, it will reappear in about two to three months (for me it did). Everytime the disk is cloned to a new one, it works perfectly. It also works perfectly again cloned to a freshly formatted old disk (even the one which was causing the problem to start with).

If you look at the write speed to the disk, you can see that it's not something obvious because the write speed, no matter how busy the disk, should never be that low on an SSD.

I've recently upgraded my board and CPU and so have a completely fresh install of Win10, so I don't expect to see the problem again.

This is my initial thought as well. Get that ssd replaced. 92% health is not really a good starting point, this is not the same as your health in a game. 92% is not a good number.

92% is a fine number for an older drive. My laptop from the same era with a bargain bin SSD does not have this problem, and it's down do 80% something.

Hello, recently my pc has been turning on noticeably slower than usual, when I open the task manager I see this, which slows every process like opening a browser/launching an app takes way more than it should:

Usually, it takes an about 20 mins or so since turning the pc on for the active time to go back to ,,normal? and it no longer slows everything.

What I wish to know is whether that SSD is going bad and should I replace it?
INTENSO. Throw into trashcan and buy something BRANDED, like Kingston (though NOT A400), Crucial, Samsung, even Lexar... have had SAME issue with Intenso ssd!

yeah but I'll be a bit concerning. I have Kingston KC600 92% after ~2 yrs of office middle usage, and it's big number for such "tasks", lol.

Nah it's fine. And I have Kingston A400's in my machines at home and they are just fine.

SMART Status doesn't mean jackshit
drive is toast
replace it ...

the issues with a400: it works great or it crash and does same as OP stuff, lol. Highly don't recommend this instable stuff. Back days there was Kingston UV400 stable as f.

SMART lies. I trust it enough to tell me there is a problem with the drive. If there is out it goes and a new one goes in.

you have a drive reporting 100% utlisation at 40MB/s of thoughput
drive is dead NAND Probly has more errors then Foxnews fact checker

Exactly why i told him to copy that SSD to another good new drive to see what happens. That way he will know what's the culprit.

He could post a screen shot from the SMART table, so we can see if it has errors.

I like your signature. I am a data recovery engineer. I am expensive.

Good to know.:)

Crystaldisk says both drives are good with the SSD's health at 92%
92%
Have a backup for the stuff you think important.
Also see if it is 92% because of "normal" write wear or other things.

An update:

I did a clean windows reinstall, resetting bios settings to default, and using a bootable drive for the windows, now the Health Status is 90% instead of 92% for some reason, honestly I feel some improvement in the speed but it still takes a couple of minutes(less than before) until the pc chills out and starts working as it should, but it IS noticeably faster. I should probably replace it, just hoping it isn't absolutely mandatory right now or do you think the drive is failing and it's just a matter of time?

I honestly don't see anything wrong with it. SSD has written about 27TB total. Is there still space left on this SSD or is it full? But if health goes down after installing windows, i would have a new SSD ready. Buy a new one now, while prices are cheap. They are expected to go up in price soon! Crucial MX-500 or Samsung 870EVO will do the trick.

Sorry THERE are problems!!! Your SSD is using spare blocks already!!! Replace ASAP, it's dying!

I've only had this SSD for a year..... thanks for helping out I'll replace it. What about the HDD? it's an old one, is it bad?

One year? Maybe you still can get warranty and RMA it?

HDD is 100 percent healthy, no problems at all.:)

A good chance a SSD's health to go down is on a reinstall which could be just wear and tear.

How ever i would of got a second SSD so i could more in depth testing on it. and make a backup of the files i wanted.

I have had 3 SSD's fail\faulty on me since intel released the x25 and only one has been under 90% the others were much closer to 98%.

Team Group Dark failed in the mid 90's
Intel X25 faulty keeps loosing connection ( 88% ) ( the other one working as it should )
Corsair Force just outright died in it's upper 90's ( The other all so working as it should ).

For me at least it's never been about the percentage.

Yes the good old Intel X25-E, i still have 6 from them of 64GB. Still 100 percent ok. SLC 1bit Nand but nowadays so terrible slow... :shadedshu:

Normally an indestructible SSD, 1 SLC cell can survive +100.000 writes.

An endurance off 2 PB!!! No modern SSD comes close to that. It's still 10 times faster then an old HDD. They all have firmware version 8860, the last version intel made and not available to download anywhere.

The 64GB model of the X25-E actually has 80GB of raw NAND flash capacity.
It was an enterprise-class SATA drive meant for use in data centers.

@Listo in Crystal Disk Info go Function > Advanced Feature > Raw Value > Change to 10 [DEC] post here. This way it isn't in hex but something we can understand.

I had similar issue, cloned, reinstalled 3 or 4 SSDs and they all kept failing (or not responding or not booting). Changed the crappy AsRock board to Gigabyte board and the Same SSD which was not booting up booted fine, all programs worked fine. To be safe I reinstalled OS and so far, seems to be stable. The previous SSDs that did not respond functions normal when connected to different boards. The AsRock board (AM1 chipset), had 4 Sata ports, 2 connected to the AM1 chipset and 2 connected to AsMedia chipset, all SSDs failed were connected to the AsMedia ports. Couldn't move the SSDs to the AM1 chipset as it was connected to couple of HDDs spanned using Storage pool. All drivers were up to date.
