So I am deciding on whether to buy a ssd or a velociraptor. My question is that if I use the ssd for only programs and a regular hdd for storage like movies and musics. Will the performance speed be slower if I have my programs on the ssd and when I click on a file like a music or movie will it be slow? The movies and music have to travel through the wires and then to the ssd. Will this be slower than if I were to just buy a velociraptor and put all my programs like itunes and its music in the velociraptor. The reason I don't want to put music in the ssd is that I might constantly delete and put music in it which causes it to shorten it's life.
I am debating between a kingston 64gb ssd or a 150gb velociraptor.

Thx.,...:):)

Go for the SSD, I have a 60GB Vertex for the OS & all apps and I never looked back at my old 300GB VR.

Can you tell me how long the life span would be for a ssd compared to a velociraptor? I heard that mlc last for only about 2 years?

Realistically, an SSD's wear leveling will start to show up in about 8 years at the soonest. And, that's assuming you're regularly formatting and moving large amounts of data every day for the next 8 years. Only data farms and administrators have to worry about this - but, no intelligent admin is going to use 60 to 256GB SSDs yet for data farms. Just keeping things realistic here.

A small 60GB SSD makes a great boot drive and can hold your most favorite game if you like booting in to the game before everyone else. Otherwise, keep the 60GB for just your OS and Office programs, and put the games on a good Western Digital Black Edition SATAII.

with media, either a drive transfers the data at the encoded rate or it doesn't. If/when we go to 4xHD maybe the VR will be better. IDK what the max transfer rate for the current spec with a variable bit rate.

But by then, your toaster will have an IP address and 2T of storage.

Thats funny, I've been also deciding on a new hard drive setup myself, my 128gb SSD is great & fast and all, but the space isn't enough for me, I was thinking of selling it off, and buying 2 of those new WD 600gb raptor drives or 2 WD black sataII 2TB drives, and put em in RAID 0 configuration.:)

Ummm do you just want your OS and programs on your SSD or do you want games as well?

I went from a 500GB Caviar Black to a couple of Intel 160GB SSD's. Most stuff isn't noticably faster, but everything feels smoother. Not sure if that makes any sense or not.

I just plan to use the ssd for programs and the os. I actually might even put programs in my sammy 1tb hdd? I just don't know if it would be slower if I was to choose this route. I heard that ssd's have the fastest boot out of all hdds. Is this true even if you have like programs and even zonealarm anti-virus running? Will anti-virus make boot-up slower? Should I use included anti-virus (norton) that gigabyte provided in the mobo disc?

The latest 1TB drives from Samsung, Hitachi and co are faster than the old velociraptors and as fast as the new ones, and they're much cheaper. I know this is not what you asking for, but you can save a lot of money.

Or get 3-4 Velociraptors and raid 0 them. You will forget about SSD's with that.

Even with my 4 Seagates in Raid 0 I notice a very quick boot up and programs load considerably faster than a single HD.
I haven't decided to jump on the SSD bandwagon because using 1 as a boot drive doesn't seem fast enough or practical enough.

I am thinking of getting 4 WD blacks 640Gb Sata 3 HD's and putting them in Raid 0 ($240 Cad) 2.5Gb of storage isn't to bad for the money where is you will be lucky to get 60Gb SSD for that cost (without trim).

Actually the kingston 64gb ssd vdnow has trim and it claims to have a 114 year lifespan. And I got it for a fairly cheap price at newegg. But I haven't built it yet so I don't know if it would boot up fast or not.

Buy one of the Seagate Hybrid hard disk drives when they come out? Get the storage of a high density disk, with around 1/2 performance of ssd (still faster than velociraptor when not counting writes)

I might consider after I build this rig and if it will work or not.

I've got 2 64gig SSD's for the 2 rigs I use the most and I love them. They're much faster than a standard HDD.

I don't care about boot times since they are always on. It's just a much more pleasant experience.

Maybe I'm exaggerating. I guess it depends on how big of a techno-hit you need to get off. But I'll make one subjective observation - you never realize how much time you spend waiting on your machine until you don't have to anymore.

Most of us have been riding the beige box for so long we don't really notice anymore. It's maybe 5 or 10 seconds for this to happen then 2 or 3 seconds for that and it just goes on and on like that all day every day. But when I got the SSD I started noticing those seconds. It's not like I'm working for world peace when I'm not on my computer, so those seconds don't really mean anything, but you'll like having them back.

That's a good point to make, because while burst speeds can increase to some degree from the SSD, that's usually their only real benefit.

The majority of them still have undesirable random read/write speeds, not much faster(and sometimes slower) than simple SATA II drives.

However the Intel models have always had the best latency, which is reflected in your observation of it being smooth.

I still cannot condone the use of SSD for generic computer use and or even gaming, as the sacrifice of several hundred GB of space and cost isn't worth the increase to boot times or map loading in a game.

Maybe when the price is on par with what our current SATA drives are...

Putting it into perspective: If I can get Win7 to load up completely from a cold boot in under twenty seconds, and my game loading/loads take anything less than thirty seconds on average, I'm quite content to leave my SSD in the spare computer for nothing more than testing purposes.

Yeah True, its just that I have alot of PC games, and they take to much HD space to be on a 128gb SSD, dont get me wrong this SSD iz awesome to the max its just I want alot of space for all my games.

Im not the most experienced when it comes to hard drive setups as well, so I kinda need help too, thats why Im using this guys thread:laugh: lol, wat do you think would be a good fast setup?
