I am curious how the SSD's have dropped in price since released... I haven't followed them from release to know how they have dropped in price.

Any predictions on where they may be priced in 6 months...
After all the flat out production cost is considerably lower then a spinning HDD with all the components. They only reason they cost what they cost is because people pay the price.

prices dont so much as drop, as we get improvements for the same prices.

Its not always capacity either, sometimes its speed upgrades, sometimes features, sometimes reliability (wear leveling, for example)

they cost what they do because non volatile ram isnt cheap. its silly to assume they're cheap to make without actually confirming that.

I noticed this holiday season you can get a 60 gb drive for half the price you could last year. Not sure if that's true for the other sizes, or if it always drops by that much each year.

I'll probably wait till 2011 to see if anything with SandForce will be obtainable in capacity of 160GB for under 200 EUR. For my netbook.

SSDs are faster. Much faster. Even the ones with lower sequential read and write speeds are fast, because they have very, very low access times.

Benchmark Scores I should run some of these sometime...
I picked up a Corsair force 120GB drive for $168AR which seems like a pretty good price for the size and sandforce controller. Prices have dropped and will hopefully drop some more allowing larger capacities to be more affordable.

The drive controllers for SSDs are more expensive than HDD controllers and the flash chips used in SSDs are more expensive than HDD platters. This is main reason for the high pricing of SSDs.

i dont see SSD prices dropping significantly until there is some type of breakthrough in manufacturing for them...though i am assuming that it is the manufacturing that is making them so expensive, and not the raw material cost.

I read about many problems with most modern SSds. Maby 3rd generation in January will get it right. Price needs to come down.

The only real issue I'm aware of with the latest ssds is more of an os problem, even with 7 you need to do like 4-8 tweaks to really get the most out of them.

indexing turned off, put in AHCI in BIOS... Windows 7 automatically shuts down the defragging but you can always make sure... Except for the indexing, I do not see anything else that could be different in future SSDs

The 180GB Agility and Vertex 2 have been hovering around the $1.65/GB for most of the 2H this year.

Right now looking on Newegg I see the Vertex 2 at ~$300 but this time without any rebates unlike most of the year. That just happened after the Thanksgiving free-for-all. Up until now you had to send in for a rebate to hit the same price for the drive.

Considering that the 600GB Velociraptors are running close to the same price it is kind of enticing. I'm waiting until I can get ~300GB for about that 280 price point. With 6Gbps drives coming soon too I'm just holding out until things settle a little.

I'm guessing having an SSD on Win XP is not possible due to no compability?

its possible, but its going to cause problems.

You will have to do a fair amount of tweaking to make it work properly.
