SSD Trim question

I found a good deal on an Samsung evo 250gb and I'm tempted. I can get a sata3 card to run it off, but the card doesn't support trim. How much of an issue would that be? Should I just run it off a native sata2 port for the trim? I may use it for system caching using Primocache, haven't decided yet. The drive is only 110can, and the card is another 50, should I bother?

TRIM is an OS feature not anything thats run on a card. Honestly TRIM isnt nothing that special, it marks blocks that need to be cleared thats it, without TRIM it will just take your drive a little more time to get around to it.

I would run it off the Sata 2 port. You won't lose alot of speed that can be noticed without benchmarks.

Yeah, probably won't matter. And I just found an open box for 80can.... I'll worry about the card later I guess. I know you can get sata3 cards that do support trim, but they are like 150can+....

Well, 82can for the evo 250, I couldn't say no. Pulled the trigger.
Just to clarify, it's the evo 850 250gb. Don't know much about ssds yet
but pretty sure that's a pretty decent one I think....

Dam these ssds are tiny, and fast! Evo 850 is dam fast, even on my sata ii my boot for a clean install with all drivers is about 10 secs.
I was worried if ssds suffered performance loss with sata ii, no they dont. Just max xfer rates suffer. Small file xfer is many times
faster than with any hd, so overall windows performance goes up. I guess iops makes a difference!
Edit: I also set a cache of just under 100gigs for my os and game drives using PrimoCache 2.2.
I partitioned my ssd for os and cache. I have 3 windows installs right now, one on the ssd with no cache, one on an hdd with sdd cache, and one just on hdd. I will test and compare results over time, especially with loading times on my games drives. From what I've seen, PrimoCache can do the job. It uses a small ram cache, and then sends the data to the ssd, just like magician, but with a much better algorithm.

I honestly thought ssds were a waste of time on my old platform, I have never been so wrong. I love my evo, dam it's fast!

Also funny, when I got it today, I ripped open the box, and there was this little tiny thing... I was going, that's all there is?
It's an awesome little drive though, very fast. Get the 250gb min though. The 128 looks gimped.

New question to ssd users... should I disable Superfetch?

The main benefit is the access times, which is what I assume rtwjunkie is talking about here.

Random access is what your computer is mostly doing when booting, so even though that drive doesn't have the throughput it could (due to the SATA2 port), it'll still make your computer very snappy.

Some cards do indeed block the TRIM commands. Old Marvell ones in particular. Amazing, I know.

Yes, I was going to get a add in sata3 card, but it didn't support trim. More expensive ones do. You get what you pay for I guess. I'm still being blown away with 12 sec boot times.
82can well spent for this evo 850. Would love to see what it does under sata3 though....

Raxco Perfectdisk for the win. V14 optimizes ssds as well, clears empty space, but doesn't touch data. Best disk optimizer out there. And no, don't run windows defrag on an ssd!
