Hello,

It's been a while since I was here :)
I have a problem with my Seagate Desktop SSHD / 2 TB (ST2000DX001).

Some days ago my files at my second drive started to load insane long. Games on Steam was starting forever or even I have to repair game before play to redownload missing files. Every Windows boot up. Games sometimes download twice. After successful download it downloads again. Once after system boot up my disc was inactive(in disc management was market as "not initialized") - fixed after reboot. So I thought that maybe so sectors at HD is broken.

Here is screen for HD Tune:

What do you think about it?
What happens? My SSHD have only 3 years.

Cheers

Change the cable and see if it fixes anything first. otherwise it seems like you'll most likely require an RMA

If anything on that hard drive is of any value , I would recommend that you download seagate discwizard, & make a clone b4 it goes full doa ( assuming of course you have another drive to clone it to). It's a great program that I've been using for years personally, I'm fairly confident that it was built upon the a acronis software ,and then just tweaked by Seagate. But it will make a full clone of any drive ,including operating system drives, while they are in use (during a shutdown of course). It's totally free, & works with any Drive brand afaik

Yeah I know I should back up, but I have 2x 250GB HDD free. At SSHD I have about 1.5TB some important data.
You think it can die soon?

@edit:

Ok, so some sector is broken for sure. Already checked warranty but unfortunately it's ended.
Should I try to repair it via this program or SeaTools for DOS without backup?

Back up asap, try the program, then replace the drive. If the Reallocation sector count raw number does not go up any more after you've run the program you might be able to use the drive for non-important things, but you really should consider it as dead.

Also, you should always have backups. Always, no matter how your system looks like. Always, no matter how supposedly reliable it is.

I would unplug the drive and not plug it back in until you can start backing it up, if there's important data on it, that you don't already have backed up, like you should have. When you see any drive with reallocated sectors, you should consider it unusable and time for the trash (or return to manufacturer, if there's still a warranty). In my experience, once the platter's surface is damaged it only gets worse and you will lose data.

Hello Tintai, reading over the post (and sorry I am late to the party as I am in another far away time zone) I see you asked if you should back up your information first before running Seatools for DOS. Yes you should but also be know that in this stage recovering your data is probably a lost cause. You may try and see if you are able to but also know that further tinkering with the drive could even further damage the data and make it impossible to recover. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Best of luck.

Storage drives are funny, often they are the least important component in many peoples minds, until they fail.

I always back up my data up while my computer is running perfectly. My reasoning for this is ,imagine if you had the ability to make a clone of yourself (while you were in perfect health), and then when you got older and started getting sick ,you could revert your mind and body back to that earlier perfectly healthy clone.... why wouldn't you do that? You could effectively live forever. Well, you do have the opportunity to do it with a computer , i Advocate you do it from now on.

Hopefully you're able to recover from this possible data loss unscathed, good luck

Those drives have a 5 year warranty so it's perty old. We haven't purchased a HD in about 8 years and have dozens of those drives between 1 and 8 years old. For most, once they hit the 4 year mark, they are relegated to secondary uses such as off site storage. Tho also have them in gaming boxes and still going strong. The number of drives lasting this long, we attribute to more than luck.

1. Keep em cool ... you will get ya 5 years if kept at stated temps but a cooler system will make any component / drive last longer.
2. Use sturdy cases with any vibration mounting
3. Place on sturdy desks ... if two peeps can move the desk without grunting, be concerned. Vibration is bad for mechanical drives.

We recommend that important data be kept on two drives in the box.... don't recommend RAID 1 as it introduces another failure made but you can mirror the drives several times per day if need be using free backup software. Finally, recommend a HD dock where you can alternate offsite storage using the older drives.

A replacement is about $90 on newegg business, $210 cheaper than regular site

Okay, so I made a backup of more important files. Remaining 500GB is not that much important so I can lost this data.

Hi. Thank you for answering. I know there is a risk and could be worse, but maybe it will help. Now with backup I can try. Thanks.

That's a very good comparison :respect: I will remember that.

Those drives have a 5 year warranty so it's perty old.
I can't find any proof of purchase so I'm not sure in 100% but I would give my head that he is not 5 years old.

About my mounting - I have everything at plastics sleds with rubber mounts. Temp never above 35/36*C.
I hade HD dock in my old case. Was pretty useful.

Anyway. Data is safe. I lost about 5GB less important stuff. Folders and files inside looks "working", but Windows freezes or do nothing when I'm trying to copy them.
Tonight I will run Seatools. I will let you know If that helped or not.

Oh and I tried cable change - does not help.

I know. I just wanna remind myself when I bought it. My warranty is no longer available. Strange... Time is flowing so fast?
Jetster, what is your opinion about this HD? Or maybe you can recommend me HDD/SSHD 2/3TB? For file storage and games.

Or maybe I will consider buying 500GB SSD for games and 1TB for files. That's a not bad idea too.

Honestly I would go with a SSD. The hybrid drives run about 215-240 Mbs so it not that much faster than a standard drive. But if you need all that space for games and dont have the $ for 2Tb SSD then a RAID 0/6 might do the trick

How about 2x Seagate BarraCuda 1TB for RAID? Or just go for one 2TB?
Or 3x 500GB in RAID0 should be fast. For storage I would go for external HD and HD dock.

I found some more HD's for backup, so I will copy everything.
In the meantime I check HDTune again:
