Long-awaited multiplayer testing phase for Blizzard's heavily anticipated sci-fi RTS slated to begin in the next few weeks, mid-2010 launch still on track.

Blizzard fans have been left wondering when the developer would make good on its call for tester applications, first issued in May 2009.

As part of Activision's year-end earnings report today, Blizzard president Mike Morhaime has now answered that question, saying that the closed beta test for Starcraft II will begin later this month. Morhaime also affirmed that the sci-fi real-time strategy title is "still tracking toward our goal of a mid-2010 release."

Undoubtedly to promote the launch of Starcraft II's closed beta phase, Blizzard this week released a promotional video featuring Battle.net project director Greg Canessa.

I'm at the point of not caring about the Starcraft franchise, for some 5 years now.

It's been 12 years since the first game. In the meanwhile, all they did was to show and cancel SC: Ghost.

Unless you're a south-korean, who the hell even cares?

They might as well just make a new franchise. Starcraft is powerless as a brand right now.

ya i'm done holding my breath for blizzard and all thier BS with sc2 release dates and such. i will be happy the day i'm playing the full version on my comp for hours on end, not the day that another "release" is suggested.

Ok. Take some time off and play the original again and then tell me that story isn't worth a sequel. It's seriously awesome in all it's opera goodness!

And release dates changes. I haven't payed a lot of attention to games the past few years, but it used to be common practice to delay games.

The story was worth a sequel 8 years ago, when people actually cared.

Honestly, I don't care even a little bit about what happens to Kerrigan and Raynor.

I'm definitely more interested in finding out if Shephard survives ME:3 or what Morrigan did to my son (Beatch, I'm taking that case to the court! Homeless and jobless witch vs. War hero high-mage living in the royal palace, let's see who gets the custody!)

Blizzard spent the last 6 years sucking on the WoW phenomenon while neglecting everything else, I couldn't care less about them.
