Since it's in fashion to drag Epic Games Store through the mud, it only seems fair to call attention to changes in Steam policy that are progressively adversarial towards indie developers trying to find an audience.

Well like i said if you don't posy , i would of done. Think it's pretty sad that Steam is still enforcing this way. Maybe it's to make the BIG FAT players stand out or they will move away from Steam ?.

Still very sad i hope they wake up some time soon, as these smaller company's are truly suffering though it.

Here's a qoute of one of the dev's on steam for Rising Worlds

@kassa: Thanks for the suggestions :) Some of these things are actually planned, in fact the "big changes" mentioned above will cover some of these aspects (especially when it comes to the visual part, i.e. lighting, textures, better terrain generation, decorative assets etc).

kassa;1638662230381619635 said:
and i wonder if this game does even sell that well anymore!?
Unfortunately the game doesn't sell that well anymore, but interestingly, this doesn't seem to be related to the age of the game, instead it's a result of the traffic drop caused by the changes introduced by Valve last October. Actually sales were much better in 2018 than in 2017, just until the visibility algorithm changed (we saw a traffic drop of 70% "over night")...

kassa;1638662230381619635 said:
just thinking about it makes me feel like this game has infinite potential and it makes me sad that it's probably just too much work and financial cost to ever get it done. :(
I have to admit that this is a very ambitious project and that there are so many planned features on our to-do list (maybe too many features?)... this is also the reason why this game is still in Early Access.
The situation got a lot harder now due to the traffic changes mentioned above, but no matter what happens, we will never abandon the game. Actually we already have a plan (which includes the "changes" mentioned earlier) how to deal with this situation and I'm confident that it will keep Rising World alive in the long run ;)

kassa;1638662230381619635 said:
wouldn't you need to start working on another game, since this one doesn't pay your bills anymore!?
This isn't an option for us. We are not going to create a new game until Rising World leaves Early Access (and by that I mean "properly leaving Early Access", i.e. not just replacing the "alpha" label by a "1.0 final version" label :D)

kassa;1638662230381619635 said:
why not just add dlc's to the game?
DLCs is something we will probably take into consideration, but we don't want to release any DLCs as long as the game is still in Early Access...

Yep, they prioritize which games are going to make them more money. Think Epic Games Store will behave differently if they get filled with a tremendous amount of indie games like steam did ? This is the reality, obscure indie games have much lesser prospects of become successful so traffic to them is cut back.

They are basically expecting that should these games become successful and drive revenue it is going be caused by external factors. Let's be real, how many times have you stumbled across a neat indie game by yourself and how many times did you find out about it because it was intensely spammed by a huge a amount of lets players or something of the sort.

Kinda their own fault for allowing just about anything on there so it becomes a sea of shovelware where no one can find anything anymore. Solution, new algorithms, result, decent games get lost in previous mentioned sea said algorithm is ignoring. I:m not a big Indie guy anyway but I do have my preferences filter set so it’s generally trying to sell me games tagged with my preferences. Pretty sure Indie is a preference choice

Probably. All of this happened immediately after EGS entered the fray.

I just went to steam and tried to find "A Plagues Tale" and I can't find it on there new released games list already. Or on any suggested list. I just gave up looking for it after a while. One of the best games released recently(for me it was anyway)and if I did not know the name of the game would be hard to find. But a lot of junk games are listed.
It would be tough to put the money into making a great game and watch it fall off a cliff on Steam. The independent games is what keeps me gaming, I would not build a new computer every 5-6 years if all there was to play was the AAA titles every once in a while. Not enough worthwhile games in Triple A to keep me buying expensive P.C.'s and the independent games is were a lot of the innovation occurs.

It's ironic that Steam is now punishing indies, when it's Valve's own fault that the indie scene on Steam is an ocean of asset flips and unfinished trash with a very few, very small islands of quality. But no, instead of Valve not being pieces of s**t and actually doing some curation beforehand to prevent the problem, now they are "fixing" the problem by punishing everyone equally - including the devs who are trying to make good games.

To compound Valve's s**ttiness, unfinished trash like 7 Days to Die - which has literally been in alpha for *half a decade* - is given top billing on their store, despite being made by effectively 1 guy; while honest, quality indies get nothing.

I'm not a game dev, but Valve's idiocy over indies is one of the reasons I welcome the Epic game store - it's finally some competition for a company that has not done much to deserve its success since it stopped making games and started selling them. Don't get me wrong, non-Steam exclusives disgust me, but if they're the kick in the balls that Gaben needs to stop being a terrible human being... so be it.

I am not trying to search for it, just looking through the list of suggested games(Top Selling, New and Trending, etc.) on the front page. That's were I start to look when opening Steam. I am assuming most people start there.

True to a degree, one of the big mistakes made with 7 days to die was updating the engine, it really set them back a lot. Although even with that said we have put over 1500 hours in to that game over the years. Shit cannot complain about that.

Maybe one day it will get back on track but with the system being simplified that may not happen, how ever their will be mods to get it back to how it used to be or better either way.

I feel for anyone who has to wade through the garbage games flooding Steam to try and shop for some good Indie games. A lot of those don't get reviewed and the only way to find them is to shop around on Steam.

In contrast Epic's Tim Sweeney has been quoted as saying, "We'll have a quality standard that doesn't accept crappy games. We'll accept reasonably good quality games, of any scale, whether small indie games to huge triple-A games, and we'll take everything up to, like, an R-rated movie or an M-rated game. A GTA game would be fine to us, but Epic's not going to distribute porn games or bloatware or asset flips, or any sort of thing that's meant to shock players."

Since it's in fashion to drag Epic Games Store through the mud, it only seems fair to call attention to changes in Steam policy that are progressively adversarial towards indie developers trying to find an audience.
I think their current system works much better. In the past they've been focusing too much on optimizing discovery queue to promote smaller developers and while it worked for devs, it was absolutely painful for end users. Basically Valve is bringing balance and natural order to this mess.
And if these retards can't make an honest living on 15-minute hentai "games", asset flips, and broken minecraft clones - good riddance.

You say that like it's a bad thing.
In some cases - yes. If Steam hasn't changed their policies on adult content, then we wouldn't see the likes of Agony or even Outlast 2 in their current form (e.g. uncut).
Of course there is a problem of a massive flood of shitty T&A games, but that's what the new approach to discovery queue is trying to solve.

gabe is highly overrated for a long time now imo, Artifact card game is proof in the pudding.

If anyone wants to avoid wading through the indie games to find a good one, I can help you out with one: Die Young.

The devs have been hard at work for 3 years, with constant patches and content updates, listening to the Early Access owners. It has been remarkably polished for a year now, with the final release version coming out in July.

I need more metroidvania style games, there is one coming out soon, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, it might be worth some time.

It's called age filtering, very easy to setup and enforce on a closed marketplace. It's plain laziness on Valve's part. I don't even play porn games but that kinda crap pisses me off. It doesn't have to be one or the other. This isn't a Boolean decision, there is a lot of gray area.

I personally have found very, very few indie games that have any value what so ever. It's like going to a flea market. You can easily spend hours wading through piles of crap nobody wants, even the person selling it, to find one thing worth buying. Then, it may be a great deal or in most cases a total rip off. The best part is 90% of the time, you have no way of knowing until they already have your money!

That's the old and beat-up argument. Parenting is not Valves, Epics or anyone else's responsibility - it's yours.
If you have a kid - I'd avoid EGS at least for another few years until they add the necessary feature set (or at least until kid is old enough for PG13).
Otherwise - it's your job to set up a shared account/family view, or pre-load desired games from GoG.
