Wow, but not unexpected. Likely his cancer is back. I was hardly a fan of his, but this is very sad and the end of an era.

Unless he has to undergo serious radiation/chemo therapy, I'm pretty sure he will still have an influence on Apple's decisions even when someone else is appointed CEO.

Just heard about this. Kind of surprised but at the same time it sort of makes sense.

A 56 year old dude with a cancerous tumor can only run a company for so long.

It was inevitable. Hopefully Tim Cook will take the company in a more agreeable direction.

That sucks. Steve Jobs turned Apple completely around. I hope he's not terminally sick.

“When you’re young, you look at television and think, There’s a conspiracy. The networks have conspired to dumb us down. But when you get a little older, you realize that’s not true. The networks are in business to give people exactly what they want. That’s a far more depressing thought. Conspiracy is optimistic! You can shoot the bastards! We can have a revolution! But the networks are really in business to give people what they want. It’s the truth.” [Wired, February 1996] - Steve Jobs

I think he's terminally ill. It was obvious by his gaunt look when he took time out for a second time a few months ago. I've had a great work colleague die of pancreatic cancer three years ago and it was awful to watch him die. I really don't wish this on anyone. :shadedshu

I'm wondering if Apple will now turn from this horrible control-freaky company I despise and boycott, to a more normal company that doesn't try to unreasonably restrict what you can do with its products?

I think this attribute has been the key to their success. You can't sell technology to the masses unless you are absolutely sure it will work for them. Restricting flexibility is a necessary aspect of this IMO. I certainly don't like it, but I don't buy their products, my less tech savvy friends do though.

I never did like apple . Though Apple has many nifty things out on the market I would hardly call them ALL inventions by Steve Jobs . Many people have done great things at Apple but only one gets the credit seems a bit arrogant to me .

Making sure it works is only one small part of it. It's mainly about locking you in with various forms of hardware and software DRM. iPods and iTunes are a classic example of vendor lock-in by Apple - and yes, I know other companies aren't exactly saints when it comes to this, but Apple really go all out. For example, why the fuck can't you change the battery in their laptops and phones? There's no good technical reason for it. No, it's purely to screw over the customer. Bastards. :nutkick:

You're right about the top nob always taking the credit for achievements by anonymous employees. Another practice I despise and one Apple certainly isn't alone in, as this practice is abused everywhere. :shadedshu

I think the worst thing about it is the media . The media seems to make it look like with out Steve Jobs the Apple era is over that NOTHING new will ever come out again and big new inventions are over . As if this ONE person was the ONLY one to come up with the Ipod , Ipad and all the other things Apple has out . it sickens me and is one reason I do not by Apple products at all !

Not a Steve Jobs fan more ambiguous but yeah he did innovate in the early 80s and revived apple more recently, i don't care that he resigned really as apple will continue.

Steve Jobs probably resigned after he read through the TPU forums and saw all the bad names that he was called.

    Yup, shares have dropped already:

But will they recover without Jobs?

I don't have apple shares but I'd be selling right now, even if they are off 5%. Knowing the mood of the stock market, plus the consumer market, apple shares aren't the best bet right now I think.

There are now two threads on this subject, i am going to try some magic and merge this with the other one, I cannot merge the other one with this as I don't moderate that one (it's news).

Edit: cancel that, I cannot get it into news lol.... I need a zooper Mod.
