Stick with 3570k or go for the 4670k?

I ordered a new custom build rig last week and it has flown through build to the test phase in just five days so it would be due to reach me next Tuesday or Wednesday. But checking the site I bought it from today I found out they now have Haswell in stock.
My dilemma is should I stick with the spec I've ordered (Sabertooth Z77 + i5-3570k) or call them and upgrade to Haswell (Sabertooth Z87 + i5-4670k) before the rig is tested and dispatched?

I'm in two minds as, apart from having brand new tech, I'm not sure what increase in performance the new gen of hardware will offer.

Looking at the site I could spec the same rig (spec's on the left) for a little less than what I paid with the Z77 and 3570k in it. Seems strange but it did come out at about £50 less. There would be a charge to change the parts and I wouldn't mind paying for the upgrade if it was really worth it, I just can't make my mind up on whether it would be worth it in terms of performance more than a cash issue.

Difference on the CPU front is negligible at about 10% in best case scenarios, the IGPU with Haswell is far better than with Ivy though, something like 50%. I doubt you are going to be using a IGPU with that build though so I wouldn't bother changing anything.

Im trying to figure the same but with 4770k upgraded from my 2500k.

In a nutshell, if you have a 2500k, 2600k, 2700k, 3570k or a 3770k, "upgrading" to Haswell will be a waste of money.

Yeah with the 780 in there I wouldn't be using IGPU. Thanks for the input, I may ask how much it would cost to swap to the Haswell gear and if it's negligible I'll do it, but if it's substantial I'll stick with Ivy.

Go for the best available for your budget. People currently on ivy with 35/3770k's would have to be either made of money or simply stupid to upgrade to ivy-e. there's only £10-15 difference between 35 and 4670k here, so if you're making a whole new build from scratch go for ivy-e.

Also processing power makes almost no difference in games at 1080p anyway. A 780-7970/Titan whatever could be run with a A8 CPU and still pull 99.99% of frames as an intel extreme. Processor only matters if you're playing Starcraft/total war/civ v or running crossfire/sli.

Delid your 3570k and overclock more = profit

The only reason I'd go for Haswell, if I were in your position, is to choose an s1150 motherboard with more/better suited features (compared to an s1155 MoBo). CPU-wise it's not at all justified to take Haswell over IVB - or even SNB in some cases.

I'll make the call in the morning and see if it's possible to go for the 4670k and the Z87 and find out the price if so. I'll update tomorrow morning once I've found out either way, and if I end up staying with the 3570k and the Z77 I'll still be happy with the rig, I just saw an opportunity to pop the newest gear in there and thought it may be worth it.

Honestly, I've looked in detail at what Z87 and Haswell offers, in short, 5%-10% more performance at best and thats it. There is nothing else noteworthy technology-wise you are getting exactly the same thing, Haswell is just a little bit more refined. By the time a Ivy Z77 or Haswell Z87 start to look tired intel are going to be a tick and a tock further down the road anyway, both platforms have exactly the same life expectancy at this time.

It may not overclock quite as well as Ivy, but overall performance should be about the same, and you'll get more native SATA 6GB/s and USB 3.0 ports. Eventually programmers will make use of the new instruction sets in Haswell and those applications will benefit greatly compared to running on Ivy Bridge systems. I say go for it.

If the new 4670k can be delidded then I think it may be worth it.

Have you delidded 3570k?

Right now HW mother boards are high in price and HW prices are not that nice. Wait a few months and I think the prices on HW mother boards and cpus will be nicer.

I don't actually have the rig at the moment, I ordered the custom build last Saturday and it was built on Friday and is awaiting testing at the manufacturer. This is why I'm in two minds as to whether I should call them and see if I can upgrade the components before it ships to me, if I already had the rig I wouldn't even be thinking about going to Haswell, I'd just stick with what I had. The difference in what I should have to pay will be key.

You should definitely get the 4670K then. There is no upgrade path with skt1155 since it was just replaced with the 4670's skt1150.

Probably not. A modest overclock will do fine instead.

I really like the features of the Asrok oc formula and the MSI Mpower.
Ok if I were to stay with my current setup, I wanted to upgrade my memory to the highest ballistix available or dominator gt 2000mhz memory, upon minor research SBs performance with faster memory don't show a real difference.
So would it be a waste if I upgrade my memory to one of the above anyways? I can get the 4670k for 2flat or the 4770k for an additional 75. I just cant find the Asrock anywhere, but if I don't upgrade I can get a soundblaster upgrade and a gpu upgrade as well. Torn between the zx and the zxr...as well as the 780 or 7970 or wait till the end of the year for AMDs new GPU?

By the way my 2500k is clocked @ 4.3ghz and I'm also running an old 8800gt

THIS.

I am quite happy with Haswell. More than happy, actually. And to me, these boards...man, they are all awesome. This ain't Z77, for sure. Z87 boards are definitely a cut above the previous platforms. Every brand has really outdone themselves. So get the Haswell, and have an upgrade path for the future.

So you're all sure Intel won't have the balls to change the socket again for Broadwell?

There's really no reason for you to upgrade unless you're looking for something specific... More Sata III ports or something like that.

more SATA ports, faster native USB 3.0 performance, better board VRMs (and other features), better memory clocking.

You should definitely get the 4670K then. There is no upgrade path with skt1155 since it was just replaced with the 4670's skt1150.

Cheers for the input, I'll be calling them at 9am tomorrow morning. Hopefully it's do-able, I think worst case would be I cancel my current order and place a new one.
