Hi there, I'm new here, I'm stubborn and don't normally ask for advice however I am stumped on this one.

I was playing a game for about 30mins and noticed a series of stutters then a black screen, still on but unresponsive. I did a hard reset and it posted then proceeded to boot however the screen went blank and hard reset again, so I removed all components systematically and test with another video card(r9 270x) which worked fine, now my card will boot to Windows (fresh install win 10) but it eventually will black screen freeze even when unattended, I think Windows is automatically trying to install the device and something is stopping it, if I install the drivers from ati (if tried from manufacturer drivers and amd's) it black screens in the same manner.
I suppose what I want to know is, is the card a paperweight, fixable or is this a software issue. I'm gonna try it in another machine 2moro, but I don't have much faith due to the r9 270x I borrowed working fine in my machine! my next thought would be to flash the card???

Give the system a thorough cleaning.

Replace thermal compound and pads on card. How old is the power supply?
@AsRock has his testimony on this

@AsRock has his testimony on this

My case and components are rather clean, I have dismantled the cooler, cleaned and re-pasted gpu, I'm going to get volt meter and check the PSU in a minute, it is a 650watt be quiet, it's about a year old, however like I said it has been tested with an r9 270x which would mean if it was the PSU it's not providing enough volts/current thus causing card to not identify or crashing when drivers are being installed as its trying to draw more power, explaining why the 270x works (lower consumption), I'm also going to try my lower slot, I have flashed the bios today with no change in behaviour aside from it being detected in 1 boot out 10 as a 7xxx in cpu-z, gpu-z however reads blank!

Edit: I think the power theory could work out due to it booting fine and obviously ruling out software as its the 3rd clean install!

PSU tested seems ok, tried it in my lower pci slot with no luck, starting to think this card is semi-dead

I'm guessing (based on your readiness to flash as a troubleshooting method) that you've flashed it in the past ...am i right?

card is 100% le toast this is pretty much the failure mode for a lot of gnc cards they will boot in basic display mode but try and load the driver and the 3D engine gets enabled = crash
probably a candidate for a trip in the oven if hes tight on cash

No my friend, it's never even been overclocked.however I have flashed devices in the past

1. tear the card down and clean it thoroughly, preheat oven to 375

2. cover the pcie power and fan headers with 3 layers thick of aluminum foil

3. make 4 or 6 foil-balls about a inch around

4. place the card gpu core up on the foil balls on a flat cookie sheet

5.slide the whole into the oven wait 10m turn the oven off and open the door fully

6 reassemble the card

I used to bake my gtx560 for about 13-15mins and always worked but had to bake every few months as would fail again until replaced card. life span got shorter and shorter
My friends Gtx780 has been working fine for over 7months after 13min bake

What's with these cards failing that way?

you never saw anything like this happen on cards from 2004 even 2002

What's with these cards failing that way?

you never saw anything like this happen on cards from 2004 even 2002

I think its got to do with the 'gpu die' itself or the weak solder joint. But could be the die like the apple gpu on laptops failing which is the 'gpu die' itsself and not weak solder joint people think

Reflow fixing nothing, a bunch of idiots did it for X box doesn't mean its a fix. Your reflowing junk, junk on junk is still junk. May last a week or a month but will RE FAIL as the solder is not replaced only flowed(WOW!).

its not a matter of the solder joints or the die its the insulating underfill under the bga package it degrades it allows the balls to shift or or possibly short out
and then you get issues
heating it up temporarily 'fixes' the problem
