ok at first i thought this problem was something else but i've narrowed it down

ive noticed over the last few months my internet speed would suddenly slow down
id check it with speedtest.net my normal speed is 30megs
but when it slows it drops to between 1-2 megs and i don't normally notice until netflix or youtube buffers at which point i will run speedtest.net and it reports internet speed between 1-2 megs
when i contacted my isp they say the line is all working and there is no problem
but here is where it gets strange and ive found the problem
when my son downloads he makes the whole internet slow on every connection

so at first i was thinking maybe he using all the bandwidth but his download on steam is about 4megs and yet the remaining bandwidth for everyone one else is less than 1 meg
as soon as he stop downloading the internet speeds up for everyone

how is this happening ?

Ask son to limit his download speeds. Also rebooting/unplugging for a minute the modem once in a while it can help with issues.

Well first. Bandwidth is split among all devices. 30meg max is what you get to the house. So dont confuse that as per device. Second, have you another router you could replace the ISP one with? Or maybe its a modem and you can replace that? If the unit is older or simply defective they could get very hot. Maybe try moving it to a cooler location. Though generally with how cheap routers and modems are its seldom worth the effort.

I'm pretty sure Steam reads in MB/s. So 4MB/s in steam is 32Mb/s. So if you are only getting about 30Mb/s, then Steam is using all the bandwidth.

thanks for reply but i know the bandwidth speed is for all internet comming into the house
if i download on my pc and run the test i get around 25 megs internet speed which is what i would expect
when my son downloads we get 2 megs

so i did a test with my isp tester they gave me to test the line when he isnt downloading the line detects as 30 when he is downloading its detecting at 2

i check when his computer while downloading on steam ,steam says current speed is between 4 .2-4.5 megs
there appears to be something happening between his computer and the internet
i checked the router it is warm to the touch but not hot but i could move it to where a fan blows on it as i have a fan extracting air on my pc which is quite cool all the time which i will try tomorrow

I'm pretty sure Steam reads in MB/s. So 4MB/s in steam is 32Mb/s. So if you are only getting about 30Mb/s, then Steam is using all the bandwidth.
ah then that explains it thanks

This is not usually about download bandwidth but about simultaneous open connections. If you use a p2p service and have hundreds of open p2p connections, your internet will work very bad. The solution is to limit the number of open connections to an acceptable value (let's say 80 for an entry level router) and there should be significant differences in internet quality. Limiting speed helps too, but the usual problem is "too many open connections".
