This winter I plan to upgrade my graphics card on desktop rig (see system specs 'blackpanther') and inevitably I got to upgrade the PSU as well.

Now I was thinking...
Rather then let my own 550W PSU and 8800GT rot on a shelf, I might use them to upgrade my daughter's pc.

She's got some 8 year old pre-built system....
An Athlon XP 1800+ (guess it's kinda equivalent to a Pentium 4 @ 1.53Ghz), 768MB DDR Ram (not DDR2), some 300W PSU and I had stuck my old 5500FX AGP inside it instead of the MX400 originally there.
Anyway, it's a pain watching her wait 10 minutes for Sims 3 to load, even though that game isn't even supposed to run according to the minimum requirements.

Anyway, I was thinking of building her a new system.

The parts which are to be included for sure are my 8800GT and 550W LC Power PSU.
Therefore I need to buy...
---- a pci-e mobo
---- RAM
---- Processor
And while we're at it... a case since she'd find it hard to believe she's got a new 'computer' inside the old case, and also if I keep the old pc I can always sell it for €200 to someone who wants it for internet/office...

What I needed advice about is the processor especially.

It must be cheap, decent for games like Sims 3, and preferably not bottleneck a BFG OC2 8800GT.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Athlon x 2 4800 for CPU, or I have a 5000be if you don't mind second hand.

This for mobo http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167433

Any ddr2800mhz will do :]

Get ones with heatsinks for longevity.

As for case just get a cheap one with at least 120mm front intake, it will be fine for your daughters needs I imagine, and all it takes it to cut the spokes of the 120mm fan area for better air flow.

How does the 5000BE scale vis-a-vis c2d performance? (Sorry but AMD processors are quite alien to me - nothing against them but I always found myself using intel...)

I was thinking of getting an E4300 - I had one (now put it in a work pc) before upgrading to E8400, and I really loved that processor.... got it up to 3Ghz with no problems...

Also while we're at it, does ebuyer ship outside the UK to Europe?

I'd say a 4800x2 was on par with a Pentium D 930, so 5000BE would be the step above + obviously black edition so can be over clocked, I've not done anything fancy with mine yet, but I have done 3ghz on stock volts.

I got it for cheap so I'll sell it for cheap, I'll PM you a price : ]

As I said I'm not that updated when it comes to AMD.
But I'm looking at this to be on a budget - it's just so I put my current PSU and 8800GT to good use, and give my daughter something better than her 1800+ without bottlenecking the 8800GT. :)

Oh this 5000be doesn't bottle neck the Asus Matrix 9800gt I was usingt ( Even at stock cpu speeds) I'm currently using a highly overclocked 3850 and that's fine too.

Mobo: Any 785G by Gigabyte/Asus (my preference is GB, but Asus is also good)
RAM: 2GB DDR2 or DDR3 (make sure to choose the correct type, DDR2 vs DDR3, depending on if you get a DDR2 or DDR3 board. Also, there is no need for 4GB for her uses. Keep in mind that an older AM2/AM2+ CPU won't work on a DDR3 board, but an AM3 CPU will work in an AM2+ motherboard)
Processor: Athlon II X2 240, pantherx12s 5K BE, or potentially an Athlon II X4 620 (overkill coming from an ~1.5ghz single core, but it's only about $20 more than the 240 here in the US, and that's what WCG is here for :D)

I've decided to get Pantherx12's 5000BE.

Then probably I'll get this motherboard... unless I find something cheaper

I changed my mind...

I'm going for this mobo, and this case.

DDR2 I have, PSU I have my 550W, and graphics I have my 8800GT.

Then I'll need a hard drive and dvd drive... got some dvd drives but they're all beige...
