I have a laptop that's several years old now. It has Windows XP Pro SP 3 on it. It had been working just fine until a month or two ago, but just recently, it started slowing down so much. I've run several spyware/virus programs both in and out of safe mode. They've found a few things, but it didn't fix the problem. I've done a disk cleanup and disk defrag, but it's still intermittently slow. I have noticed there's a random SYSTEM task running in task manager. I've also noticed that when I open Internet Explorer, two iexplore.exe tasks open in task manager. Any suggestions?

You can try Malwarebytes too. With extra processes opening and things like that, it's probablly time for a reinstall unfortunately.

The "system" process is normal. Internet Explorer sucks and is slow. My suggestion would be to use Firefox or Opera.

Run HJT and post a log.

With desktops I don't usually recommend reformatting unless it's too impractical to solve in another way. With laptops I'm much quicker to say, "just reformat", and given this case I shall say it again, "just reformat".

I noticed that Firefox is the slowest, even with only one tab going, it just comes to a halt. I haven't been running anything that would require a RAM or hard drive upgrade and up to a couple of weeks ago, it was running smooth as butter. I will run those extra programs and see what happens.

I would re-install windows. It's the only way to optimize the current hardware. In 45 mins you could be running like new again.

Looks pretty clean actually. There is some minor stuff you could change but I seriously doubt it could be related to the drastic performance change you're talking about. If you care though here they are in brief:
- you could use the Windows wireless configuration utility instead of the broadcom one [may be complicated]
- You don't need AGRSMMSG.exe to run at startup unless you're using a 56k modem [easy]
- Up to you on the Nokia cellphone service [easy]
- adobe reader speed launcher is 99% useless in my opinion [easy]
- FsUsbExService seems kinda useless [easy]
- Java Quick Start is mostly useless [easy]

How much space is left on your HD? Low space can cause slowdowns.

Reformatting is sounding more and more likely...

how much space is being tied up due to system restore?

I been banging my head for some time now wondering why is my OS taking up so much HD space!

I deleted the System restore, defraged and WOW!!!! Speed is back again. I only enable a system back up when doing something risqu A!

While your at it, open it up and clean out the dust. You'll be surprised at how much collects over time on the heatsinks in latops.

Why dont you slipstream SP3 into the XP install so it will only take 45 mins to reinstall?
Nlite works very well for this.

heres a link, explains how use it and download.

26gb is getting a bit low... try deleteing say 20gb of crap, then defrag your HDD and see if that speeds it up.

make sure your laptop is on high performance mode when plugged in.

Well, this is a 40GB hard drive, so I haven't even used 20GB of space. I mainly use it to complete my Master's assignments/MS Office applications, so I don't use up much space. I would agree with the majority at this point and say I just need a defrag...

26GB of free space is more than I have available on at least 3 of my drives combined . Also the drive I found listed for his laptop is 40GB (though he may have optioned it or gone aftermarket) and if it's less than say 250GB, 26GB free would be enough.

I highly recommend exiting as many programs as you can and letting the defrag run when you're not using it. I've noticed in a couple rare instances that large, heavily fragmented files opened by programs will not be defragged by the defragger unless they are closed prior to defragmentation.

Just a suggestion.

Oh yeah, I never have any programs running if the defragger is going. I worked at a helpdesk for 2 years so I've got a good grasp on all the basic cleanup rules and what not, but this wildcard problem has stumped me.
