I got a 3070 Ti a while back for about $1200 USD and it does alright. I'm getting 60-100 fps in Halo Infinite on ultra. However I am very tempted to flip it and go AMD because there are some good prices on quality 6900 XTs right now. Net cost would only be a couple hundred bucks and I would expect 20-30% performance boost putting me a lot closer to 165 fps. I have heard AMD gpu drivers have gotten a lot better. Am I nuts to consider this or is it a good idea?

After having a 3070 and 6800 (non-XT) both at the same time, I have no regrets over selling the 3070 and picking up a 6900 XT (Red Devil Ultimate).

I haven't had any issues with drivers with a 5700 XT, 6800, and now the 6900 XT. Other have different experiences, but it probably comes down to the games you play.

Some live and die for DLSS and Ray Tracing. I don't care about either of those so it wasn't part of my decision.

My thoughts are the 6900 XT should be fast enough for me for the next 3-5 years, and at that point I'll see what's being offered by nvidia, AMD, and hopefully Intel if they have something released by then.

What psu d you have? The card I am looking at is a red devil non ultimate, which should be pretty killer. Faster than 3090 half the price.

When I changed from the 6800 I was using a Seasonic TX-850 Prime. I probably didn't need to, but to be sure I changed to a Seasonic GX-1000 Prime.

According to the reading from my UPS, the maximum continuous draw at the wall from the entire PC and monitor is under 600w while gaming. According to W1zzard's tests here, the 6900 XT can have some fairly high short term spikes that might cause issues with lower wattage PSUs.

If it's 2-300 usd out of pocket to swap it might be worth it your basically trading better RT support and better ai upscaling for probably 20-25% more rasterized performance on average... I have both a 2080 ti and 3080 ti and except in maybe 2-3 games the difference at 1440p or lower is negligible unless using heavy RT in somthing like Cyberpunk somthing the amd gpu isn't going to do well anyways.... Its really 4k where the 6800XT and 3080 series or above spread their legs beyond that it comes down to how much you like DLSS.

I guess if you play games staring at rtss then maybe it might be more worth it to you.

If it was me I would keep the 3070ti and just wait for rdna3 and Lovelace.... I don't personally expect Ampere or RDNA 2 to age well I think both vendors are going to push out some crazy fast cards due to the renewed competition although the market is somewhat fing that up. I still expect tons of rdna 2/ampere owners to dump their cards next gen.

I wouldn't be overly worried about Driver issues amd has gotten much better with that since they botched the 5700XT launch it that's all that's holding you back... Not a huge fan of powercolor did 3 builds with red devil cards they all failed (5700XT) Faulty DPs... I would recommend a Sapphire over them even at a price premium.

My advice
1- keep the rtx 3070 ti, its working fine and and giving you good frame rates for the $1200 you spent.
2- If Amd go Sapphire
3- Keep the RTX 3070 TI

I know the itch but you already spent $1200, you already tested the card, its working perfect and it gives nice frames numbers.
IMO i will stick to it and keep that cash in my pocket

If you have an AMD CPU (Or plan to) it makes sense.

What does that have to do with it?
I think we can expect further symbiosis between AMD graphics cards and CPUs. For example, SAM. And yes, before it's said, Resizable Bar has been a feature available on BIOS for some time and Nvidia has their own modern equivalent but the SAM implementation is superior on testing done by Hardware Unboxed.

Based on what I saw at CES and what I have seen in reviews. AMD is leveraging the CPU and GPU to work together. In a Hardware Unboxed video their Ryzen 1st to 4th Gen comparison proved that you got more frames using an AMD GPU with your Ryzen processor vs an Nvidia card. AMD recently has made it so that owners of AMD laptops with the CPU and GPU form AMD are seeing compelling improvements in resources allocation at a hardware level. There was a time when AMD laptops were the only way that you could see your CPU information until an update before Xmas that allowed you to do the same thing on the desktop. I am positive that Intel will leverage their IGPU to help with XE and beyond. AMD's move to RDNA2 (skipped right past RDNA) on their APUs is a direct response to that for me.

You do realize that SAM works on Intel? It was actually available on Comet Lake before AMD implemented it on 3000 series Ryzen.

And based on me actually using RDNA2 on both Intel and Ryzen, that's all marketing in attempt to have people make comments just like you did.

Is RDNA2 the same on both? Do you get the same frames using FSR and Rebar on both platforms? I too have tried it on Intel and AMD (I have a 10400F) and the 2600 (For me) benefits more than the 10400F using FSR in Games like Godfall.

I'm pretty tempted to do it because I can get a Red Devil 6900XT for $1500 USD, NIB w/ free Far Cry 6 free Resident Evil and free Xbox game pass, and the net cost is only probably $300 because I can easily flip the 3070ti on ebay. I have been tracking this on a spreadsheet and an OC 6900xt is actually be best FPS/$ on the market right now. Faster than 3090 and fraction of the price (I'd never get a 3090 for the insanity of cost on those. Money is not a big issue for me but practicality is). And next gen is a year away and will be sold out instantly yada yada we know how that goes. I have been flipping GPUs to upgrade for years now and it works well for me. Very low $/hr or gaming evened out over the year.

DLSS is cool but no reason to stay nvidia. And I don't care much about RT. Shooter and multiplayer games I'm serious about I like to be 100-165 fps but for eye candy single player games I don't really care as long as it's over 60.

Who said the itch? Yes I definitely have the upgrade itch. Hits once or twice a year damn it!

$300 is not terrible I would still avoid powercolor but otherwise it's not a terrible switch. I definitely wouldn't touch one of their cards without warranty... I would still opt for pretty much any other brand.

I have not had a PowerColor since my 3870 lol. I bought XFX and Sapphire back on my last ATI cards. It is this version, looks like a 2 year warranty. I'm sure I'll have the upgrade itch again before that runs out

Yeah, I'm the same way will definitely be replacing the 2080 ti with lovelace or rdna3.
I actually almost grabbed a 6900XT but the RT performance worried me so I held out.... Hell of a card otherwise. I'd still spend 100-150 more just to avoid powercolor but that's just me

Do you know of any 6900xt other options in stock for non absurd price points? I would definitely consider options. But the red devil is pretty fast too and the price is not bad.

Nope, haven't really been keeping tabs. Just what pops up on newegg here and there. Microcenter seems to have higher prices than newegg at least here in California.

I don't see any 6900xt under $1600 so I guess Amazon is the best deal right now! Damn them! Probably gonna do it

Yeah, Amazon's price right now is the lowest I've seen on a 6900 XT in quite some time.

You do realize that SAM works on Intel? It was actually available on Comet Lake before AMD implemented it on 3000 series Ryzen.

And based on me actually using RDNA2 on both Intel and Ryzen, that's all marketing in attempt to have people make comments just like you did.
SAM is AMD branding. Oh, and Intel has no GPU (yet). Different.

Yep gonna do it. Then flip the 3070ti, Far Cry 6 code, Resident Evil Village code, and Xbox game pass code, and with 5% back on the retail transaction the net cost drops to $1350-1400. Plus it will have warranty.

I have a power meter so I can keep an eye on my 750W gold psu. They are saying these are power hungry but the reviews and everything are very generic about suggesting a psu size. This calculator that I've trusted for years says I only need ~700W even with my OCs applied https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works but did you consider the 6800 XT? There is not much difference in performance but maybe $$$.

Fully understand if your heart is with the 6900 XT. You wont go wrong with either.

Good luck and welcome to team Red : )
