CPU and mobo = $260
DDR3 and HD 5770 = $280 (If you have little more money I would get the HD 5830 :) I hear its a Fermi killer  )
Total = $540 not bad, and good for gaming too. You can always get another HD 5770 later on for crossfire ;)
The 5830 gets killed by the GT200, it stand no chance against the Fermi. :p

thanks for all your input but im gunna go with the Q9550 but i do have antoher problem. when i OC on this board i know i can run stable at 3.6GHz but lately when i reboot sometimes it wont go to bios or boot up. then i have to clear CMOS and re clock everything over again, and if i go past 3.6 it will just crash

Trust me, you wont have to OC a q9550 unless you decide to pickup a graphic card with more power then a 5870 or gtx295, and thats gonna be pretty much impossible until fermi arrives or amd releases a new series of cards.
If it wont bootup or not even go into bios, it can be the memory, or the power supply , even your cpu, it can be many things
maybe try updateing your bios?

This is coming from an ex nforce s775 user.

If all you're planning on doing is upgrading for gaming (hence I don't game as much as alot of other people) you may want to just go with a new video card and new cpu cooler. Then if you feel the need to jump over to quad that's when I suggest going to AMD. Meaning you don't need quad yet to really enjoy games with a passion. :) Don't forget you can always sell your old setup.

Seriously, if gaming is the concern, forget about a new cpu. Turn your OC down till it's stable without always having to reset the BIOS, and just buy a new video card. Modern games do not depend on the cpu nearly as much as they depend on the gpu. Upgrade your video card first, then worry about a new cpu/mobo/ram later.

That's true But if he wants to upgrade for everything else a true quad is better
But if it's just for games Wile E is 100% correct..

I just don't think his PC will be used just for gaming though

LOL, I love how these threads always seem to go, first it starts off he has a budget of $300 than a bunch suggest stuff that costs 2-4X more.

Listen to what Wile E suggested

No, but with a $300 budget total, and him saying his primary concern is gaming, the video card is the way to go.

Now, if he comes across more money, by all means, buy a better cpu. But, since his board already supports quads, there is no sense in going AMD for him. Phenom II isn't any better than Yorkfield. They are virtually the same clock for clock, so why would you go thru the extra expense of a new mobo and new ram when what he has already supports the Yorkfields?

If he were going to go thru the expense of upgrading his mobo and ram, he might as well wait until he can afford to go with 1366 or 1156 at least. At least then his money would be spent on a cpu that is faster than both Yorkfield and Phenom II clock for clock.

Only those with systems that can't take Yorkfield, and require a full upgrade to move forward, would benefit from Phenom II. (Or those that just like to tinker with a lot of different hardware, or just want to build from scratch)

To add even if upgrading to 1156 I would suggest going with at least an i5 750.

But if he can have an all around better system with a slight gamble why not..LOL
***Total personal opinion here...nothing based in reality****

But just as my first post pointed to for $296 he could have DDR3 a Quad core and sell his CPU, Memory and Mobo for about $140 either buy a 5750 and XF that 5670 on the x4 pci-e or
sell that 5670 and get a 5770 1gb and be better off all around

The light gamble part already answered your question.

Hell, for $300 he could almost grab a 5850, and still be way better off in gaming on his aging dual core than buying an AMD system with new ram and a quad with 5770 after gambling on selling his current stuff.

And still, if he wanted to go quad, he could buy a Q9550, and still be cheaper in the end.

Nope, still no reason to go AMD in his case.
