Alright long story short, my wife was on the computer at work and when i got home it didnt work. Alright went through the whole system, re-did Everything, and in any order. Alright didnt work. Wouldnt post or power up at all. So i got a new PSU....Didnt work either.... So must be mobo? borrowed a mobo and still didnt work. So im leaving it up to the CPU since that the common factor in everything i tried. i have an EVGA 680I Mobo. I had a E6700 dual core processor with 2x1gig OCZ 1150mhz ram, Geforce8800GTX PCI-E. Im curious what processor should i get and would you think id need another mobo? I already have a new psu. Just dont want it happening again. Also the cpu heatsink is huge, so im almost positive it didnt overheat, wasnt home, but pretty sure like a 1lb of copper with a 120mm fan on it, with atric silver 5 paste done just right lol. Curious what would be the best solution. Money is kinda tight but im an avid gamer.... or was till the computer broke. Any help would be awesome! Thanks

Right, you had a E6700 core that you suspect died. And you have a EVGA 680i mobo, and you want us to recommend a good processor. Try Q6600?

He said money is tight, so maybe thats too much asking from him. Anyways, any good q9*** would do, even q8*** if you can't afford em. :toast: And if you want, you might even have a look at the dualies, like the e8***.

If you can afford the quad, well go for it (a bit future proof, it that word even exists) But if its basically just for gaming right now and you don't care about games using more cores later on, well the e8*** will do fine.

Not too sure the 680i will support 8xxx or 9xxx cores, but pretty sure it will support the Q6xxx cores.

It might! my XFX 680I LT SLI board would handle them but it might be diffrent with it being EVGA

It's all a question on IF you have flashed the latest bios before the system crash.

Really sorry to heaqr that it went downhill for you although I have a suggestion. You still have the ddr2, I know it won't be much of an upgrade but why not:

CPU: AMD X3 425 - ~$70
MB: AMD 760G/770 - ~$70

That IMO, would cost about as much as your proposed e8500 and would be just as good.

Have you already picked up a new power supply? What parts you think you could RMA?

@Fourstaff

If the OP is into overclocking, I wouldn't suggest a Q6600. They really aren't great on a 6x0i series. A 45nm counterpart though would be better paired for the board.

hmmm odd, trying take out your graphic card, and boot it, or processor and boot it, sounds stupid, if the motherboard isnt cooked itll get pist off and beep at you, lol make sure all your shits plugged in to the motherboard, easy stuff to remember even easier to forget, make sure your ram is good, pull it out and test just 1 stick. reset your cmos, your bios, and if that doesnt work yell at your wife, im kidding about yelling at your wife.

This is what i did. Was notifited it wont turn on. Humm ok checked all power. Alright from there i took each piece of hardware out till there was nothing. And the same thing. Only the leds on the mobo would turn on. No fans, no error codes ( the EVGA 680I has a 2 digit hex code located at the bottom to tell you any errors. But nothing. Ok fine, power supply. Simple enough. Ordered another one, alittle bigger than the one i had, redid the board making sure its not grounded and all cables ect plugged in. And damn same thing....Alright, went through the whole order process again take each ram stick out individually, then moving them to the other 2 dimm slots, taking the video card, cpu, sound card and still nothing. I then ordered another mobo, same version, plugged it all in, EXACT same thing. Hummm returned that mobo since the odds in 2 mobos doing the exact same error is so slim it has to be something else. Ive tried everything nothing turns on besides the 2 mobo led lights and the power lights on the front of the computer so i know its not the switch, and besides there is a manual button for on/off and reset on the board tried those. Cleared cmos, disconnected HD's still nothing. booted the computer with mobo+cpu nothing, and just mobo, nothing. Always thought the mobo put the computer through post but apparantly according to another forum poster on a diff forum some cpus interact to trigger the post test. Alright so last thing that hasnt done anything is the cpu, so thats where i am. Ive done computers my whole life, and its stumped me bad. And now im here.

Long to short, nothing i do will get the computer to post. Ive gotten a new psu, tried diff mobos, traded hardware one at a time, differnt slots, and altogether out, never once have i recieved and error code, or and fans coming on.

Im not a big overclocker but i do like it to be an option. hell i had me E6700 @ 3.14 ghz or something like that, mind you its been a while and that wasnt a full blast just a good ass jump. and it was running about the same as stock cooling at stock settings with my aftermarket cooling.

The E8400 is a beast of a CPU.

http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=50175 yea the 680i will not run a 8*** or 9*** series. so, if you had to tell me which one would be a good set up, im not big on amd, had them in the past and nothing but problems, accept 1 build....intels kinda kicking it lately though, so preferable to stay with intel side, but what mobo/cpu lookling at about 200 250 max for the two.... ifs its lga 775 is preferable due to not wanting to buy ddr3 just yet. plus the i7's are still a bit prices as well as the i5's when you look into that along with a mobo+ram.

hey bro try this, is your motheboard grounding out on something if it is, it wont turn on no matter what you try, make sure theres no steel to steel contact anywhere
